Sri Rama Katha

Highlights of HH Sri BalaSwamiji’s 7 days discourse on Srimad Ramayana from August 11 – August 18 2013.

Day 1, August 11, Bala Kanda

Jaya Guru Datta.
Rama+ayana= Happy+Journey
Understanding the principle of the Supreme Soul is the goal of human birth. Time is His form. Understand the principle of Time.
Rama is eternally with us, helping us. During Rama’s reign all the subjects were happy and virtuous. They all enjoyed pure hearts. We pray to live such a life. When the Ramayana is musically rendered and enjoyed, the power of music enhances the power of the story. Swamiji is Nada Brahma. That is the Supreme Soul Himself incarnated as Sage Narada and sang the glories of God. Without the presence of Sage Narada in this world, the seven musical notes will not be available to us. 7 Kandas or sections are in the Ramayana. Sage Valmiki was born as a hunter/thug because of a curse. He forgot his past birth. By the grace of Sage Narada, his guru, who initiated him, by chanting the name of Rama in the reverse as MaRa because he was illiterate and could not even utter the syllables properly, he became Sage Valmiki who composed the Ramayana. The study of Ramayana has the power to transform lives.

A child asks the mother, “Where is this crow come from? From the tree. Where did the tree come from? From a seed. Where did the seed come from? From the Tree.” The endless circle of questions goes on.
People have different beliefs. Do not ridicule. Respect all beliefs. Don’t insult or put down. Einstein, the great scientist believed in God and had great devotion. Science and belief in God are compatible.
Questioning is fine. Do not suspect or doubt. Narada was asked by Valmiki- Is there a person living at this time, possessed of all the 16 great virtues?

Brahma’s rosary reminds us to chant God’s name continuously – Penance. His water pot tells us to maintain cleanliness and purity. His book tells us to updat our knowledge of God constantly. His staff reminds us to remain strong with Yoga – swadhyaya (self-study)
The one with 16 virtues is said to be divine. These virtues are possible for man to possess. Preventing bad qualities to develop is as important as developing positive qualities.
1st question asked by Valmiki.

Even if you think you already know the story, listening to it again from Guru makes the story absolutely powerful. A mantra that you are already familiar with, when Guru gives it as initiation, is fully empowered. Just reading it in a book does not give the mantra such power.
Language expressed as question and answer between disciple and guru reduces the distance between the two.

Never forget any favor or food received from another. Always be grateful.
Dharma, when practiced and protected, protects. Rama practiced and propagated Dharma. Rama is patient as Mother Earth. Earth is not inert. The energy that is responsible for the existence of the Earth is immense.e.g. A factory is inert. The one who runs the factory is alive and powerful.
Valimiki told Narada about Lord Rama who is a perfect embodiment of all the 16 virtues. (like our most revered and beloved Sri Swamiji)

A heart without compassion is hard as a rock.
Maa nishaada (the first two words of Valmiki’s exquisite poetry) – also means ‘Lord Vishnu’, not only ‘Don’t, Hunter’
The first verse of Ramayana has two meanings. Superficial meaning is, O hunter, for killing the male bird of the playful couple, may you not live long.

The inner meaning is, O Lord Vishnu, you, who have rid the world of the demon Ravana, enjoy immortal fame.
Valmiki felt surprised at the flow of poetry that sprang forth in a moment of anguish and anger. Brahma told Him that Mother Saraswati was gifted to the sage for the purpose of accomplishing Ramayana’s composition.
As long as the Ramayana is studied, the world will flourish. When the story of Rama is forgotten, the world will perish.

Guru’s grace from Narada and God’s grace through the blessing of Brahma brought the Ramayana into existence.
Pure unselfishness comes slowly. But let the selfishness be decent and for a good purpose. ‘Even if others suffer, it is okay, but I should be well’ – is terrible selfishness. This should never be entertained.
Happy Journey, Sita’s Story, and Killing of Ravana are 3 titles given by Valmiki to this wonderful story.
The story begins with the mention of the twin boys, Kusha and Lava, the sons of Rama. They were taught the musical rendering of Rama’s story by Sage Valmiki. Sri Bala Swamiji now is a manifestation of those charming twin boys, singing the glories of Rama. How sweet!

The venue in Eluru is now Ayodhya. Sri Bala Swamiji represents the twin sons of Rama. The listeners, the great sages assembled there, feel that they are contemporaries of Rama. The sages who were thrilled to listen to the song of the twins, rendered for the first time at Sage Valmiki’s hermitage, offered everything that they had, to the singers with unbounded joy.

The twins went out into the world to propagate the story. Rama invited them to perform in the presence of a huge assembly. Rama declared that this story was giving immense happiness and solace to him. The boys did not know that Rama was their father or that they were singing his story. The story begins thus. The boys begin by describing Ayodhya.

The story begins with the description of the reign of King Dasaratha, who was then 60,000 years old. He ruled with 8 ministers to assist him. This history occurred in Treya Yuga. The king was childless. He did not give in to dejection. He engaged in prayer instead. He thought of ways to overcome his deprivation of heirs. He decided to perform a yajna, a great ritual to attain progeny. He obtained the approval and blessing of his guru Vasishtha.

The minister Sumantra, based on past references suggested bringing Sage Rishyasringa to perform the yajna. The sage suggested performing the Putra Kameshti (Desire for sons ritual) yajna. Invisibly all the gods were present there. Seer can behold them. They discussed the problems being created by Ravana, who had such boons that he could only be killed by a mortal human being. Hence Lord Vishnu was prayed to incarnate as Rama and his brothers, Dasaratha’s son. The first festival after the new year commences (Ugad) is Sri Rama Navami, the Birthday of Rama. 4 sons were born to the three wives of king Dasaratha as a boon given by the gods at the ritual.

Sage Vasishtha gave names to the babies. Rama means Happiness. After a brief description of their childhood, the boys completion of their education is mentioned. Sage Viswamitra came looking for Rama. First time Guru is described as coming to seek a disciple. He came to take Rama with him to protect his yajna from treacherous demons. Dasaratha who promised at first to satisy the Sage’s desire, broke his promise when he was asked to send Rama, because he could not bear to part from him. Viswamitra got angry. Vasishtha intervened and convinced Dasaratha to send Rama.
Rama released the curse of Ahalya on his way to Viswamitra’s hermitage. Rama ran and worshipped her feet when out of thin air she emerged at the approach of Rama.

Subrahmanya Swami’s story is told in this context of Rama’s journey through the jungles with Viswamitra. The birth of river Ganga is told. Today is Naga Panchami. Mention of Lord Subrahmanya today is a great blessing.
Rama and Lakshmana reached Mithila with Viswamitra.

Shatananda at Mithila, the son of Ahalya told Rama of the greatness of Sage Viswamitra. Rama was surprised and enchanted to listen to his greatness and his struggles with Sage Vasishtha.
The bow of Siva was brought. Ravana earlier had boasted that he could lift the bow of Siva with his moustache. The moustache came off and since then, he was left with one side of the moustache missing, an interesting story.
Rama effortlessly picked up the bow now and he tried to string it, by the permission of Sage Viswamitra, the bow broke with ear-splitting sounds.

King Janaka spoke about the marriage of Sita. He had vowed to give her in marriage to the one who is strong enough to lift the bow of Siva. Janaka offered Sita in marriage to Rama.
King Dasaratha was invited. Guru Viswamitra came to Mithila for the specific purpose of performing the Atma Kalyana, the marriage of Sita and Rama, a divine ceremony, an extraordinary event.
Victory to Sita and Rama. Great blessing to listen (or read) to this story.

Happiness is always followed by something unpleasant. On their way back to Ayodhya, they were met with a huge whirl wind. Parashurama appeared in a fierce form and challenged Rama to hold the bow of Vishnu. Rama, in the presence of Dasaratha remained silent out of respect. Dasaratha fainted at the insult hurled at Rama.
In the same chapter, two incidents are described. The conflict between Viswamitra and Vashishtha, a kshatriya and a brahmin. Now, the conflict between Parashurama and Rama, a kshatriya and brahmin. Rama effortlessly held the bow of Vishnu. Parashurama’s arrogance was quelled and he left.

Rama returned to Ayodhya accompanied by Sita. Bharata went to visit his maternal uncle. Rama and Sita led a very happy and amiable life. They communicated heart to heart. They are one. End of Bala Kanda, the first chapter. Ayodhya Kanda, the second chapter, a very important part of the story will be narrated tomorrow. Begins at 6:30 pm (India time) sharp. USA central time 8 a.m. Jai Sri Sita Ram. Jaya Guru Datta.

Day 2, August 12, Ayodya Kanda

Jaya Guru Datta.
Eluru, also known as Helapuri is a sacred region where many sages have performed penance. Swamiji has established here the Nam Dattanatha Shrine, the 8th of the 9 Navanatha temples. Nam is the 8th syllable ‘nam’ in Ga na pa ti Sa chchi da nan da.

Rama symbolizes the perfect man. His life shows a model human life. He demonstrates eternally to humanity how to achieve the goal of one’s existence.
Listening to God’s glories and good topics every evening is very important to receive proper guidance in how to live and conduct oneself. This Ramayana discourse is like an offering to God.

The 7 chapters (Kaandas) in the Ramayana denote the 7 yoga chakras.
Never feel dejected about the situation that God has placed you in. Go,d is showing grace. He is not causing trouble. God is above everything.
The world is filled with the intelligent, the foolish; the rich, the poor; the fortunate, the unfortunate. The common feature in all humans is the presence of the 7 yoga chakras in each of us. They guide us through life. If there is imbalance amongst them, or if the spinning of a certain wheel is faulty, trouble occurs. To explain this, Sage Valmiki has composed this work, the Ramayana, divided into the seven sections.

We have completed the first section, Bala Kanda yesterday. It explained about love and service to parents, Guru, and guest. Regard your parent and Guru, and your guest as if they were God, is what the Ramayana teaches. That is the meaning of the Veda edict – Maatru devo bhava, Pitru devo bhava, Aachaarya devo bhava, Atithi devo bhava.
Listen and then ponder over the topics as to how the information may be applied in one’s life. Actual application in life is the most important part.

A man went to the doctor and complained of a terrible stomach pain. He held a gooseberry in his palm. The doctor said, you have the medicine right in your palm. The gooseberry may be eaten everyday except on Sunday. The Sun is insulted if it is eaten on a Sunday. The gooseberry has immense healing powers. Everyone can eat it 6 days in a week.
Ramayana is the Science of Life.

Now the second section, Ayodhya Kanda begins.
Ayodhya means ‘impenetrable’. Through war or military strength, it cannot be entered. It described the City, its citizens, the regime, the lifestyle of the subjects and so on.
The maternal uncle of Bharata came to take Bharatha to his kingdom. Satrughna went along with him. The twins Lakshmana and Satrughna attended each upon one of their brothers. Lakshmana stayed with Rama. Satrughna remained with Bharata. Rama’s virtues are extolled in this chapter. The most important virtue is that he never forgets the slightest favor rendered by anyone. He forgets the hundred disfavors done to him.

The citizens of a king prayed to Sun for longevity of 10,000 years. The prayers were answered. The king cried when he heard this. How could he alone live long with all the subjects dead and gone. The king also did penance and won the boon that the subjects also would live 10,000 years.

Rama is totally forgiving of countless troubles caused to him. Rama is very intelligent. Speaks lovingly, charmingly, and initiates conversation even with enemies. 100% successful idea for destroying enmity.
The enemy is happy. You are miserable thinking ill of him. Say hello or Jaya Guru Datta even to those who have done you harm. Enough to greet. No need to indulge in additional chitchat. If they don’t respond, leave it. It is their business. Rama never felt or showed arrogance about his skill or knowledge. Confidence is different from arrogance.
What is loved most in the world is oneself, not possessions. But the people of Ayodhya loved Rama more than they loved themselves. He was dearer to them than their own lives. Rama knew the meaning of Dharma, Artha, and Kama. Moksha (Liberation) is for the spiritually evolved. Dharma varies with each individual. The doctor gives an injection giving pain. That is his dharma. Dharma is interpreted as per the circumstance. Artha is livelihood, not just money.
Kama, desire should be a good desire, appropriate desire. Love within marriage and family is appropriate. Living within one’s means is very important. The credit card is landing many in trouble, rather than causing convenience because it is used irresponsibly. The card is innocent. How it is used, is in our control.
The yearly prediction given as per Hindu almanac the Panchanga on Ugadi, the New Year’s Day gives an idea as to how to plan the year’s budget.

Rama always engaged in self analysis. Examined himself for weaknesses and faults constantly. He never criticized or humiliated others. Rama’s virtues are enumerated. Dasaratha the king felt that Rama would be a good successor to the throne. The 10 sense organs and organs of actions are kept in control by Dasaratha. Dasa=ten. He used his organs as his chariot to conduct himself and rule the kingdom. He consulted his ministers and subjects for their opinion. They unanimously agreed with the king. The king pretended to be upset that they were dissatisfied with his own rule and wished Rama to be their king. The citizens convinced that their love for Rama makes them desire him to be their king. Sumantra, the minister carried the message to Rama. Rama was brought to Dasaratha, to the assembly. Dasaratha announced that Rama will be made the Crown Prince the following day.

Everone left. Dasaratha sent Sumantra to fetch Rama again. Rama felt puzzled as to why this second summons. Dasaratha spoke wonderful words of advice to Rama as to how a king should handle his kingdom. He then advised that Rama should fast that day along with Sita. He said that they both should sleep on the floor. Bharata is away now. Your coronation should take place during his absence, the king said. This indicates some trouble in the family. Dasaratha did not send invitations to Janaka, the father of Sita or to Kekaya king, the father of his third wife, Kaikeyi. Why? This was perhaps a mistake. The consequences of an elder’s mistake affect the future of the children. The king felt that they would learn of the event later. Rama felt puzzled but did not speak. He accepted his father’s decision.

Rama’s friends ran and informed Rama’s mother Kausalya of the happy event. Rama went to his mother and instead of boasting, said, Father has placed the responsibility of ruling the kingdom upon my shoulders. Kausalya gave her blessings. She perhaps feared some trouble from Kaikeyi. Rama told Lakshmana that as everything else, he would share the kingdom with him. He was showing his loyalty and generous nature. There is not a trace of selfishness or arrogance in Rama. He is full of respect for his parents. As per guru Vasishtha’s command Rama and Sita followed all the stipulated austerities.

All the invitees arrived. The city of Ayodhya was packed. Generous gifts were distributed. A strange character in Ayodhya now makes her presence. The hunch-backed, sullen-faced Manthara, whose parentage is unknown, the attendant of Kaikeyi, was on the terrace. She noticed the joyous atmosphere and enquired from another servant. She was told about Rama’s upcoming coronation. The totally upset Manthara ran down the stairs and woke Kaikeyi up and scolded her for sleeping when such terrible things were happening. When Kaikeyi asked what was happening, Manthara told her. Kaikeyi felt happy and gifted her a precious ornament. Manthara tossed it aside. She then proceeded to flatter Kaikeyi with the intention of poisoning her mind. She convinced Kaikeyi that Rama would do harm to Bharatha and it would make Kaikeyi become a slave under Kausalya. She also said that Rama would enjoy the luxuries of the palace while Bharata would agonize living in a jungle. That broke Kaikeyi’s heart. She begged Manthara to save the situation. She sought her advice.

Manthara said, Go to the anger chamber. Remove your ornaments. Be dishevelled. Demand from Dasaratha that Rama should go into exile to the forest for 14 years to live like a mendicant. Bharatha should be crowned as the Crowned Prince. Rama should leave today.

Dasahratha went to give the good news to Kaikeyi. What met his approach broke his heart. He begged Kaikeyi to reconsider. He praised Bharatha’s virtues. Would he approve of your demands? You are trying to displace a mango tree and replace it with a neem tree. Would it give sweet fruits? At times critical like this, we all need the teachings of Sadguru to come to our aid. Kaikeyi did not have this. When Sumanta, upon the command of Vasishtha came to fetch the king, Kaikeyi spoke to him instead from the anger chamber, to bring Rama there. Sumantra went to bring Rama. Sita said, her first words, May the gods protect you. Rama, puzzled at this unexpected summons, went to his father who lay in a stupor. Kaikeyi made her demands after extracting a promise from Rama that he would obey her words. Rama said, I will promise to abide by my father’s word. Within minutes Rama lost his kingdom. He readily agreed to leave at once to the forest, risking the terrible reputation that he may suffer from for such a punishment placed upon him.

Rama declared that respecting the wish of parents is my greatest dharma. I will leave right away, but I have to inform my mother Kausalya and console Sita. Don’t entertain any doubts. Rama’s demeanor showed no change. He appeared as happy going in, as he appeared coming out. He appeared like the full moon. He claimed that he is a normal human being, the son of Dasaratha. But his behavior was beyond the capability of any normal human being. He went straight to mother Kausalya.

Kausalya offered him a seat. Rama simply touched it. He told her that the king had ordered him to go into the forest on an exile for 14 years. The mother swooned at his words. Rama comforted her. Father’s command must be obeyed. Kausalya cried and lamented her future plight. Kaikeyi will humiliate me, who will show concern for my troubles? Give up kingdom but at least remain in my presence as a servant to the king. Or take me with you to the forest. Rama said, the king requires your attention. You must stay. Lakshmana said, I will kill whoever made such commands. Rama pacified his brother. He said, this is God’s will. You cannot go against it. Lakshmana declared, Who is such a God that ordains such injustice? I will attack Him. Rama scolded him. Lakshmana has the spirit of Adi Sesha, and that is why he hissed in anger. Rama then went to see Sita.

Rama remained completely restrained up until then. He never felt agony at losing the kingdom. Only that he had to leave his near and dear ones. When he saw Sita, he burst into tears. He told her, No coronation today. I leave for the forest today. You stay and care for my parents. Obey the commands of Bharata.

Sita did not agree. I will go with you. She insisted. Ramayana is also called Sita’s story. Victory to mother Sita!
Rama said, You think forest living is like a vacation? Crickets, wild animal sounds, no utilities, mosquitoes, now. What about jungles in Treta yuga? Sita insisted and insulted Rama that he is being a coward at not having the courage to take her with him to the jungle. She said, how did my father King Janaka find you to be a worthy husband to me? Rama then agreed. He was just testing her determination. As if going for a picnic, she got ready. Sita and Rama are one. Lakshmana was listening to this from outside and wanted to go with them. When he said this, Rama said, no, stay and look after parents. Lakshmana was adamant to going to serve his brother and sister-in-law. He brought the weapons. Rama said no to chariot. We will walk, he said. In a moment, everything changed. joy and sorrow constantly alternate, like waves. But in the end, joy will remain.

Sita was raised to be so delicate. Never suffered the heat of the sun. Today she walked out into the sun without even a parasol. Dasaratha’s permission was sought. The king said, stay for just one day. Rama said, today I have good thoughts. Tomorrow, my mind may change. It may turn crooked. Karna’s story: Krishna and Arjuna came to him asked for charity. Karna gave the golden bowl he carried in his left hand, as he was applying oil on himself with the right hand. Arjuna asked, why is giving with the left hand (inauspicious). Krishna said, by the time one switches hands, the mind may change its resolve. That is the greatness of Karna.

Bark robes were brought by Kaikeyi. Rama wore his. Sita did not know how to put it on. Rama wrapped it on Sita and made her wear them.
Kaikeyi’s father could understand the speech of birds. He once laughed at what a bird had spoken. Kaikeyi’s mother was there, and thought he was laughing at her. The sage who gave such a boon to the king, said, you must never disclose what you understand. When the queen insisted, the king sent her away to her parents’ home.
Heartless Kaikeyi behaved like that. It was despised by all.
Sita will be made king by me, said Guru Vasishtha. We will give her advice, and the army will protect the kingdom. Sita is the soul of Rama. This is Guru’s sacred statement. A new dharma he created.
Kaikeyi whispered in Dasaratha’s ear, send them away quickly.

Rama got ready to leave. Rama=Dharma. Dharma=Rama. A divine embodiment of Dharma is Rama.
Vasishtha said, the entire Ayodhya will follow Rama into the forest. You will remain here alone, Kaikeyi. Sumantra took Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana in a chariot to the river bank. The citizens and the royalty ran behind the chariot. In the night, to deceive the citizens and to prevent them for following them furthe, Rama said, take a detour with the chariot and take us to a different place. They were taken to Sringiberapuram where Guha was the chief, the boatman. Guha was a tribal, but was filled with devotion. Not in the Valmiki Ramayana, Guha said, I wish to wash your feet to ensure that the the touch of feet does not turn my boat into a woman (like Ahalya). Rama crossed the river and went away towards the forest.

Sumantra returned to the king and gave him the news. When you toss a stone far away, unknowingly if it hits someone and they get hurt, the sin descends on you. You cannot claim that you did not know. You should not throw dust down from the balcony causing dust abhishekam on the people downstairs.

Dasaratha confesses his sin.
Dasaratha had the skill called Sabdavedhi, to detect far away sounds. He went to hunt. ‘I heard a gurgling sound, thought it was an animal. I shot an arrow. I heard a human scream. A young ascetic lay there dying.’ His parents were blind and thirsty. I came to get water for them to drink. Who will take care of them in the future? Please take water for them. Please remove this arrow. If the arrow is removed, he will die. Knowing that Dasaratha closed his eyes and pulled it out. hearing his footsteps, the old couple mistook him to be their son. Dasaratha confessed his wrong-doing. The old parents of the dead boy rolled on the ground in grief. The old man was a powerful sage. He said, because you yourself have confessed, your life is now spared. Make a funeral pyre for my son. We will also jump in the fire. As they entered the fire, they cursed the king, You will also die from the loss of your son.
Dasaratha told this incident to Sumantra.

Bharatha returned and looked for his father. Kaikeyi received him. She answered all his questions. Bharatha flew into a rage and blamed his mother. He insisted that what his mother had done was totally despicable and unacceptable.
Indra felt two drops of water fall on him. He looked up. Surabhi, the wish-fulfilling divine cow shed tears. Indra asked why she was crying. She said, look at that pair of oxen in the field. They are working so hard, and yet, the farmer is beating them.

Bharatha screamed, I have done no harm. How will I console Kausalya? How will I answer the entire citizenry? I am totally innocent. This never was my wish. He vowed that all sins may descend upon him, if there is ay blemish in his mind. He was convinced that Rama would be brought back, and laid grand highways to welcome him.
Swamiji’s gotra is Bharadwaja. He is famous for feeding the hungry. The sage carried a pot of rice on his head searching for the hungry so that they could be fed. Family lineage, parenthood, Guru must never be forgotten. Their glories should be learned and respected.

Bharata performed the funeral rites for his father. He went to Chitrakoota where Rama was staying to invite him back. Seeing him approach, Lakshmana feared that he was coming to attack. Rama dispelled his fear. 100th sarga in the Ramayana is very important. How are you? is a repeated question. It is full of valuable advice. Rama enquired about his father. Rama grieved and made offerings to the departed soul. Rama refused to return. Father gave you the kingdom. He gave me the forest. This is the asset that he gave me. You rule the kingdom. I will rule the forest. Truth=Dharma. I cannot disobey. Rama refused to follow the advice of the elders who tried to make Rama change his mind. Jabali spoke atheistic philosophy. Rama became angry. Vasishtha said, he is taking that stand only to convince you. Rama refused to return. Then Rama’s sandals were requested to be placed on the throne. Bharata wore them on his head and vowed to rule the kingdom with the sandals of Rama as the king. He also wore bark robes and ruled from Nandigrama, after leaving the royal entourage at Ayodhya.

Rama left Chitrakoota. Rama then visited Sage Atri. He perhaps inquired about Lord Dattatreya. But Datta is a global traveler. Anasuya, the wife of Atri asked Sita to describe her wedding. Sita happily described all the details. This was a way employed by Mother Anasuya to distract Sita from her grief about the exile. The aged couple gave Rama and Sita many priceless gifts. After the visit Rama entered the Dandaka forest. End of Ayodhya Kanda. Tomorrow we will narrate the Aranya Kanda. Victory to Rama and Sita.

Reverential and grateful prostrations to Sri Swamiji and to Sri Bala Swamiji. Jaya Guru Datta

Day 3, August 13, Aranya Kanda

Jaya Guru Datta

Chant OM Shantisshaantisshaantihi – the Shanti mantra three times every day, For peace for self, home, and country. For body, mind, and soul, and other threesomes in life and the world.

Ayodhya Kanda of yesterday glorifies brotherly love. Ayodhya Kanda is like an individual completing studies under the protection of parents and entering the world as an adult. It shows the nature of the world. It is frightening with its dangers and demons. It is all an illusion. It teaches how to tame the world. Never be afraid of it and run away. We have soul power in all of us equally. Sages are visited by Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. Such holy visits gave them strength and guidance. Daily temple visits and satsang should become an addiction for us. By such habits, our inner strength inreases. Don’t say I have no devotion. I was not raised with such habits. It is a must, to inculcate such habits in children, to protect and preserve dharma.

Prepare a log, a card to mark your presence at at temple or satsang each day. A prize will be given by lottery to those who have checked all 365 slots for the year. The hermitages were all divine. Rama loosened the bowstrings before entering them, like we leave footwear before entering a temple. You do not carry weapons into a temple. The staff of a sanyasi reminds that the body is mortal.

The sages were thrilled to see Rama. Not in Valmiki’s version, but other Ramayana renditions say that they desired to embrace Rama. His form is so enchanting. Worship of idols is universal. Keep photographs of parents and dear ones is equivalent to idol worship. Beginning stages before immersion in meditation, name and form are most important. Even IDs require name and photo(form). Not only stones are idols. Sometimes they are made from wood. Sages, with great research have prescribed way of proper worship. Those who are enlightened and past that stage of ritual worship will not deny that as a form of required initial step in spiritual pursuit. Devotion develops with worship and chanting of God’s names.

Name of God is as important as a signature on a cheque. Without the name, the donation or payment is invalid. Those who have reached the other glorious bank of the river are beckoning us to join them by these methods of worship. Before Indian Independence every street corner had a temple. The British knew that our spiritual strength has empowered us. Now that spirituality has receded and the country’s spiritual strength is decreasing. It is not right. Social and spiritual progress are like two eyes. Both are essential.

Rama said to the sages, in Krishna incarnation I will satisfy your desire for an embrace. Hence He incarnated as Krishna and the sages as the cowherd girls, the gopikas.

For the sages, Rama was king and had the responsibility of protecting them from the persecution by the demons. The sages have put their staffs down and are in the vow of non-violence. Chaturmasya the austerity of Sri Bala Swamiji now is because of the rainy season. At least for two months instead of four months, if the body remains in one place, it gets renewed energy. The sages are teaching us how to pray. How a pregnant mother cares for the child in the womb, is how tenderly God should love and protect us, is how we should pray. Whether the fetus is male or female should make no difference. To God, it does not.

If with a pure intention we enter the world of people, help will come some corner. God will certainly send help. Rama was pure at heart and so God sent him help always. That is seen throughout Aranya Kanda. 14 years of forest life was spent thus. Viradha, the demon was seen. Fearsome form, ugly form, with numerous dead animals stuck in the tines of his fork for his meal. Don’t fear such forms, move forwards. Place your trust in Truth and virtue. Viradha saw Sita and wanted to steal her. A sign of what is to come in the future.

Viradha put his fork down, picked up Sita by her waist and ran away. Rama and L attacked him. He put S down and picked up the brothers. Then ra and la conversed and decided to cut off his arms to free themselves. V heard their words and remembered his past life. I have been waiting to see you, Rama! Pacify others by your pleasing words. You never know what troubles are bothering the other person.

Mother Kausalya is great for giving birth to you. I was a gandharva and received a curse from Kubera for my wrong doing. Dig a hole and bury me. Rama and Lakshmana did so and Viradha was released from the curse. Victory of Rama and Sita.

Viradha told Rama to visit the hermitage of Sarabhanga as he assumed his divine form. When challenged, remain courageous and virtuous. Then poison turns to nectar by God’s will. Have completely firm faith.

Rama saw a divine sight at the hermitage of Sarabhanga. A divine chariot was floating in the air. A conversation was taking place between the sage and Indra, the celestial king. Indra came to take the sage to heaven. The sage remained to have darshan of Rama and Indra left.

Seeing Rama is heaven itself (like darshan of Sadgurudeva). I will donate to you all my merit or celestial life and complete penance. Rama teaches us a lesson. During satsang, pray that 1 day’s fruit of satsang sacrifice for the well-being of the soldiers protecting the country. Donate a part of your merit to Sadguru. The fruit of japa should be given away to the ill for their relief. Rama said, But, ( the shlokas from Ramayana are rendered. their sound power is immense) – never accept every loan that is offered to you.

To reclaim the loan you took in past life, the loaner will be born as your son and will empty your coffers.

Rama said, please keep your merit. But show me how I can earn my own merit. One should earn one’s own merit. Only japa is done by proxy because some people have earned the power of japa and their japa is more efficacious. Annadana’s fruit is multiplied enormously. Please show me a good place to reside, requested Rama. Sarabhanga sent Rama to visit Suteekshna Maharshi. He demonstrated the following day how to ignited yoga fire and left his mortal frame as if he was leaving a sheath like a snake.

The austerities of Chaturmasya are tough. The vows of sages are even more intensed. Mareechipa, survives on sun’s rays. The fallen grains that are left after the birds also have eaten, gather and eat raw. Eat only leaves. rice grains with husk are chewed and eaten. doing penance remaining in water. sleeping wherever, without a bed, standing on one foot, only water as food, only air as food, is it possible? they did that. the sky is the roof for sages, even today there are some like that. street dwellers, no blankets, in railway stations, bus stands, ill and shivering.
In Surat, at night we distributed blankets to such people. To see their smile and relief made life worth living. Serve the beggars and save your merit. SEVA and SAVE.

Sleeping on sandbeds, on rocks, penance looking up constantly, with wet clothes, only japa, not talk, standing amidst four fires and the sun at the top, such sages prayed to Rama for protection.

Say Sharanu (I surrender) to the Lord and He offers His lotus feet (charana) to you for protection.

Rama said, Why are you praying to me, instead of ordering me? It is my honor and privilege. Now my exile is proving to me to be a boon. I am not happy with your approach. It is my merit to protect you. You will witness a battle in which the demons will be killed. Sage Suteekshna was visited. His body is wet and smeared with dust and mud. He never wiped his body dry. He came running and hugged Rama. Rama did not mind. Like a doctor who is so tolerant of our odors and ugly patches and germs.

The sage told Rama to visit Surarshana and Agastya sages and return to me. Sage Agastya is remembered by all in South India. Sita expressed a doubt. In the forest, I will be happy with Rama, no battles, or war or politics, she thought. Now what is this promise to kill demons in war? Why this violence even during exile? Speaking lies is one addiction. Desiring another’s woman is another addiction. You are free from these two. But you have the third addiction of attacking or harming those who have not harmed you.

The demons have not harmed us. Why should you invite enmity with them? She is a housewife whose duty is to protect the home. Long ago, Indra came disguised as a hunter went to a sage and gave a sword for safekeeping to test his integrity. After Indra left, the sage decided to test the nature of the sword. He began felling trees and killing animals. He kept a weapon in his home without a need for it. Never keep weapons at home because the mind may turn crooked at any time. In course of time, the sage into a hunter. I have heard this story. I am afraid. We are dressed like ascetics. Why do we need weapons and fights? That sage ended up going to hell.

Dharma gives comfort and gives all benefits. Dharma is the essence of life. Our dharma is now to live a non-violent life. We should keep our minds under control. Pleasure does not give happiness. Only dharma gives happiness. Even if you can enjoy 100% luxury, if you sacrifice your plenty to share with the needy, your home will ever prosper. That is the declaration of the scriptures.

Rama responded gently. Sita, you spoke out of love for me and with concern for my welfare. Every family in every home should listen to the Ramayana daily. It will increase harmony and will remove conflicts in the family. This is not my initiative. The sages have prayed for protection. We carry weapons. You blessed and prayed to my weapons. It is my duty to offer them protection. My decision is right in giving them promise of protection. This is my vow to protect those who pray to me. He stands in a temple, only to answer our prayers. My promise was given to great sages, not to ordinary souls. Even ordinary persons are protected by Rama. I will give up my life, and sacrifice your life and Lakshmana’s life before I break a promise.

A mother and a wife goes to any sacrifices to help a son or a husband keep his promise. That is dharma. Victory to Rama and Sita.

Rama continued his journey. A lake emanates beautiful music. A sage is performing penance under water. There are celestial dancers dancing there to the music. That is the melody that you hear, a sage explained to Rama.
Nada Mantapa in Mysore Ashrama is built in the shape of a fan in the shape of a palm frond. Hanuman used such a fan to give solace to Rama. The fan gave not only breeze but also music. That vision came to Swamiji and has resulted in the construction of this divine auditorium.

Sage Agastya has moved permanently from the north of India to the south. He quelled the arrogance of Vindhya mountain which kept growing. Now he permanently resides in South India. He initiated the establishment of idols for worship. There is science behind the story of Agastya’s move to south India. He also drank all the water of an ocean.

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana approached Sage Agastya’s hermitage and sent word with a disciple seeking permission to enter. Agastya came out running to invite them in. Many temples were there that they visited, including the temple of Lord Subrahmanya. A temple consecration will take place here for Lord Subrahmanya.
Agastya gave many weapons for Rama’s use. They are invisible and will appear at their remembrance. A Rama’s arrow that is designed to kill only the intended enemy, was given.
Rama requested advice as to where to build an ashrama for their future residence. Agastya meditated. He knew that Rama’s purpose was to kill Ravana. He knew Rama’s heart. Panchavati was suggested as a suitable place to build a home, on the banks of river Godavari.

Eluru is close to river Godavari. Perhaps Rama visited this place. He wandered the entire country. There are five banyan trees there, near Nasik.

As they traveled towards, it a huge condor (a big eagle) was seen on a tree. Lakshmana was frightened and was going to kill it. The bird spoke. I am a friend of your father King Dasaratha. I will protect your wife Sita. Jatayu spoke for long giving the description of nature’s evolution and the birth of bird species. Lakshmana built a beautiful house and won the embrace of Rama.

Surpanakha arrived there. Her husband was killed by her own brother Ravana who humiliated her and sent her away to live in Janasthana in the forest with other demons. Anger at her brother remained in her heart and she knew that only Rama is strong enough to kill Ravana, the murderer of her husband. But this secret is not revealed.

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana lived happily. Now calamity occurs. Surpanakha said, I am beautiful (she changed her form). this Sita is thin, leave her and marry me. Many foreigners come to India to see the strange phenomenon that couples stay married here for long, unlike in their countries. Youngsters should be given loving advice. Freedom from marriage due to wrong temptations should not be condoned or encouraged.

Rama said in fun, go to Lakshmana, he is here without a wife. He knew who she was under her disguise. Surpanakha went to Lakshmana and said, marry me. Lakshmana said, I am a servant. You will become a servant’s wife. Go back and ask Rama. The brothers were playing a game. Surpanakha attacked Sita because she stood in the way. Rama got angry.

Lakshmana cut off the nose and ears of Surpanakha. In pain, she gave up her disguise and ran to Khara and Dooshana. She told Khara to get Sita to be his wife. Khara sent 14 warriors to fight Rama. They were killed. Then 14,000 demons came to fight. Rama told Lakshmana to keep Sita safe in a cave while he alone fought the army. Rama’s power of Vishnu was seen at this time, it was said by my teacher, said Sri BalaSwamiji. Rama employed the Sammohana astra. Every demon appeared as Rama and they attacked each other and got killed, while Rama only employed one arrow.

One arrow went to Akampana and came back without harming him, because he came to battle wearing a saree. He went and told Ravana to take Sita as his wife. If everyone got killed, who will carry the news to Ravana?

Surpanakha went and cried to Ravana. Nyagrodha tree had an eagle on it and warned Ravana, Rama is Vishnu. Be careful. Don’t attack Rama. Mareecha also gave the same advice to Ravana. Maareecha had suffered the attack of Rama’s arrow and fell into the ocean. Maareecha gave the description of Rama, Rama is the embodiment of Dharma. Maareecha sees Rama everywhere. “Even the sound, rrrr (the first sound of Rama) makes me tremble.”

Rama is a divine mantra. Ravana paid deaf ear to Maareecha’s advice. Threatened to kill him if he did not cooperate in stealing Sita. Maareecha decided it is better to die at Rama’s hands.

In Ayodhya Kanda, Sita promised Rama that she would not ask Rama for anything. Now she asked for the first time, to fetch the golden deer ( Maareecha in disguise). She broke her promise and suffered for it. Remember this. If it is a real deer, I will bring it. If it is illusion, I will destroy it.

Rama said, and left. Sita heard the voice of Rama, crying out for help. Lakshmana knew that it was a fake call. Sita was not convinced and accused Lakshmana of desiring her when he refused to leave her alone to go to his brother’s rescue. When Lakshmana left, Ravana came and abducted Sita. Jatayu tried to protect Sita and fell down wounded. Sita cursed Ravana. She tore a piece of her saree and tied a bundle of her jewels and dropped where 5 monkeys were playing.

A king was abducted while the soldiers were asleep and was asked for a last favor. He asked for a sack of coriander and sesame seeds. the king mixed the two and dropped them along the way. Soon they sprouted. The soldiers when they woke up saw the trail and rescued the king.

Ravana kept Sita captive and threatened to kill her if she did not marry him. Rama returned and found Sita missing. Lakshmana disobeyed Rama’s word not to leave Sita alone. Another costly mistake. Jatayu was seen was suspected of harming Sita. Jatayu explained what happened. He died and was granted salvation. Rama and Lakshmana proceeded searching for Sita begging nature for help.

Kabandha appeared and told Rama to seek a friend to help find Sita.
Children tell lies to cover up for friends these days. Kabandha told Rama to meet Sugriva.

When Rama saw the Lake Pampa he felt very refreshed. It is said to be near Hampi near Bellary, near the place of Hanuman’s birth. The chapter ends on a happy note. Rama thought, I love Sita immensely. But this lake is giving me solace. Tomorrow is Kishkindha Kanda, the meeting of God and disciple. Shabari’s story also will be narrated tomorrow although it is a part of this Kanda. It will take time to describe the nine types of devotion. Victory to Guru, Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman.

Reverential and grateful prostrations to Sri Swamiji and to Sri Bala Swamiji.

Jaya Guru Datta. Jai Sri Rama.

Day 4, August 14, Kishkindha Kanda

Jaya Guru Datta

The Aranya Kanda, which was narrated yesterday, represents our youthful period, after the completion of studies, the phase of life where one is young, strong, competent, and earning. During that time, people forget that they themselves will one day grow old and become incompetent, forgetful, and weak. They forget that as children they had irritated their elders countless times with their own incompetence, questions, and misbehaviours. The aged must be shown respect and tolerance. One must never get annoyed with them for their inabilities, their repeated questioning, and they slow movements. When elders approach, our inner energy force rises up ten inches above the head. That is why we should rise and stand. Only then the energy descends and attaches itself to us again. If we show disrespect, our life span will decrease. Rama demonstrates in the Aranya Kanda how elders should be respected, honoured, and how their advice should be received and followed. Kabandha told Rama of the necessity for friends. Wherever we go, we must make friends with the local persons. Friendship with Sugriva was recommended. Rama followed the advice.

A friend should know the local language, customs, and geography. Such friends are required. In the ashrama of sage Matanga Shabari, who was extremely old had served the ascetics. As they all left for heaven, they blessed that Rama will give her darshan and will send her also to heaven. Daily she waited for the arrival of Rama with decorations on the floor, fresh flowers, and fruits. Anticipation for Guru’s arrival is very important. Chanting mantra given by Guru and waiting for His arrival is itself the greatest penance. After ten years when Guru arrived, the disciple said, the thrill of waiting for you has ended now that you have actually come. Seeking Guru is itself ecstasy. Arjuna sought forgiveness from Krishna that he could recognize his divinity and treated Him as a friend, companion, and brother in law. Sadguru is Lord Shiva Himself in a human form. We must be aware of His divinity. Shabari belonged to the forest tribal community. She was so old that her voice had a tremor and she had to crawl on the floor. That she tasted and ensured the sweetness of the fruits to offer Rama is not mentioned by Valmiki. Tulsidas went into more detail in describing the aspects of devotion.

When Rama approached, she got the energy to run and greet him. She brought Him in with great excitement. Rama showed great affection and respect towards her. He received her hospitality. Shabari showed Rama the antique pieces in the ashram used by her Guru. The fire in the firepit was still burning. Shabari prayed for Liberation. Rama gave His blessing. Shabari went to heaven. This is the concluding episode in Aranya Kanda.

Kishkindha means crowded and filled with confusion. Now we discuss Kishkindha Kanda, the fourth section of Ramayana. It is of great benefit to listen to the original verses from Valmiki Ramayana. The lake Pampa reminded Rama of Sita. The spring season was causing Him heart ache especially in the evening time. Evening time is the time for prayer and satsang. Rama and Sita’s mutual love was never selfish. Their heart was one. All birds and animals were enjoying as pairs. Rama felt the grief of His loneliness.

In His dejection, Rama told Lakshmana to return to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom along with Bharata. He said He was going to give up His life. We must remember all the inspirational wise sayings from the scriptures. Lakshmana gave Rama great advice and solace. These words giving confidence to Rama are to be remembered. “Rama, Your mind is pure. You are courageous. Console yourself. Hold yourself together.” Sneha in Sanskrit means grease. Friendship attaches itself like grease. Such a friend who remains attached in joy and sorrow is a true friend. A wick totally soaked in water, when soaked again in ghee or oil will certainly burn. “Remain with me, Rama, I will take care of all situations. I will bring Sita back to You. Be courageous.”

Enthusiasm is most important. The body may become weak. Mentally remain hopeful and energetic. Hope conquers everything. In New York, there was a bridge that was going to be built. The engineer fell accidentally and became wheelchair-bound. His mind was still on the bridge construction. The paralyzed engineer could only move one finger. He was mentally alert. By a code language he communicated with his colleagues and got the Brooklyn Bridge constructed.

Rama had divine weapons, but was determined to use only human capabilities to attain his goal. Swamiji remained in the dreary land given to Him by Mother Goddess, rejecting offers of better sites, and has turned it into Vaikuntha, heaven itself. Rama felt encouraged by Lakshmana’s words. The brothers proceeded towards Kishkindha. Anjaneya always appears simple and ignorant. One must be careful with those who appear very humble. Hanuman is our God. Hanuman meets Rama in this section, a most beautiful incident. The ramayana’s highlight.

Sugreeva saw the approach of the brothers and got frightened. Hanuman spoke his first words to give courage to his companions on the Rishyamooka mountain. Sambhramastyajyataa – give up your agitation and fear. Sa is the first note in music, the first letter of Saraswati. Hanuman’s mention drives away fear and frightening spirits. Children love Hanuman. This is Malaya mountain of Sage Matanga. Your enemy, your brother Vali can never approach this hill. He is cursed by the sage. A rope is being mistaken by you for a serpent. Fear has its purpose for self protection. Be cautious about the height of a cliff, and the depth of an ocean. Hanuman is Sugreeva’s minister. He is scolded, You are displaying your monkey mind. You have forgotten that Vali cannot approach this place. Only with Guru, you must always remain humble. Otherwise you must not belittle yourself. You should be confident.

Anjana, Hanuman’s mother gave him the Rama mantra. She said, keep chanting this mantra. Your lord will come looking for you. You will shed tears of joy when you see Him. Your hair will stand on end. You will soar into ecstasies. He remembered that. He was chanting Rama’s name.

A father and son were camping, sleeping inside a tent. Middle of the night, the dad woke up. Woke his son up and asked, what do you see? The son said, the stars are beautiful. Fool, know that someone has stolen our tent. One must use discretion. Common sense is required. Hanuman scolded Sugreeva, to use his intelligence. You are our king. How can you protect subjects if you are afraid and foolish, and lack confidence.

Sugreeva told Hanuman, wear a disguise as a brahmin mendicant and approach the two who are approaching. They are dressed like ascetics but are carrying weapons. You look at me and speak with them. If i get the sign that they are sent by Vali, I will run and hide to protect myself. If they are not enemies, then I will wait to learn more about them. Hanuman approached the brothers and spoke beautifully. He spoke and Rama merely listened. As his mother Anjana predicted, Hanuman did not feel the thrill and excitement. Why?

It appears as if you are like the Moon (Rama) and the Sun(Lakshmana). He told them all about Sugreeva. Hanuman also disclosed his identity and revealed his disguise. Then only Rama spoke to Lakshmana, telling him that this person is Sugriva’s minister, his ambassador. Anjaneya is worshipped because Rama Himself said, the one for whom I have been waiting, the one for whom I have come on exile to the forest, he has come to us. Rama recognized His devotees. God is more eager to see His devotees than the devotee is eager to see God.

Rama said, His speech is exquisite. Rama praised Hanuman. His knowledge is immense. He knows the Vedas and Shastras thoroughly.

Hanuman was in the attire of an ascetic. He began speaking to Rama. “Where have you come from? You both look radiant but it is perplexing to me because you appear regal and yet are dressed as mendicants. Rama is cool as the moon. Lakshmana is fiery as the Sun. You appear so mighty that by yourselves you can protect this entire earth.” Rama merely acknowledged the speech without uttering a word. Hanuman spoke a lot and even disclosed his identity. He said, “I am Hanuman, the son of Wind”. Rama, who remained silent up until then, spoke to Lakshmana. “This is the minister and envoy of Sugreeva.” Rama praised Hanuman, saying, “He, for whose company I have come to the forest on exile, he has himself come to me.”

It is as if we proceed to the temple, and Lord Venkateswara Himself comes to meet us wearing His conch and disc. Guru is ever thinking of us, even if we should forget Him. He always awaits our approach.
Rama said, “How beautifully he speaks!”

What language do you use to speak with God? Use the language of the heart. Only then God is pleased. No need to show oratorical skills. But Hanuman is conscious of his oratorical expertise and hence has not recognized Rama. Although his mother had told Hanuman that He would feel exhilarated at the vision of his lord, Hanuman had a hint of pride at this time and hence he was blinded to the divine sight of Rama.

Rama said, “He knows all the Vedas. He alone who has mastered the Yajur Veda can speak the way he does.” Rama is facing Lakshmana and speaking only to him. Hanuman could not hear what was being said, but suspected that Rama was talking about him.

Rama said, “When he speaks, there are no unnecessary gestures or mannerisms. These are the signs of a scholar.”
Some people look down or look at the lips of the other person, while they speak. Such habits are wrong. Some look elsewhere while they speak. That appears as arrogance. One should look into the eyes directly and speak.
“He speaks at the right pitch, volume, and pace.”

One should not speak too slowly or too fast. For everything in life there should be a rhythm and proper pauses.
“His speech was most appropriate and persuasive.”

Napoleon was once attacked by the citizens and enemy armies. He had only 200 men with him. He decided not to run away but to fight. He faced his enemy. He asked for a chance to speak for two minutes. He was given permission. He spoke for 20 minutes and the entire opponent army that listened with closed eyes, switched to his side, leaving their leader standing alone.

“One needs an ambassador of the caliber of Hanuman”, said Rama. “Without such an ambassador how can a leader accomplish any mission?”

Karyasiddhi Anjaneya is the title given to Hanuman by Rama. “He can accomplish any task.”

Lakshmana spoke, “We are the sons of King Dasaratha. We are Rama and Lakshmana.”

Hanuman felt horribly inadequate that he failed to recognize his Lord Rama. He fell flat at His feet and wept. He forgot himself and lost his disguise and turned into his monkey form. Rama raised Hanuman and embraced him most lovingly. Hanuman bathed Rama with his tears of joy. Hanuman felt bad that although his mother had told him, he failed to recognize his lord. Hanuman felt disappointed that Rama also did not recognize his ardent devotee when he saw him. Rama knew who Hanuman was, and yet waited for Hanuman to become humble before letting him know of it.

Hanuman placed the brothers on his shoulders and took them to the Malaya Mountain to meet Sugreeva. He put them down at a distance, and told Sugreeva that these are friends. Sugreeva projected himself in a beautiful form, rather than in a monkey form. He came to meet Rama and Lakshmana.

One must never feel ashamed of one’s natural looks.

Sugreeva extended his hand for a handshake. Rama held Sugreeva’s hand and examined the lines on his palm. The moment Rama touched Sugreeva, his original form returned to him.

Only those who like us as we are, are our real friends. We should not have to put on a different appearance just to impress others. There is such a thing as beauty, no doubt, but it is transient. That is not the most important thing in life. Dark skinned persons, and persons with deformities also get married, and lead happy and productive lives.
In the above two instances, Rama has proved that one’s true form should always be projected, not an artificially assumed form.

Sugreeva and Rama pledged mutual friendship.
Vali and Ravana also had pledged mutual friendship. They promised not only to share their happiness, sorrow, and wealth, but Vali was willing also to share his wife. Vali said that to Ravana. It is very wrong. That is why Vali had to be killed because he treated a wife as being of not much value.
A king went hunting. The horses got tired and when the chariot was stopped, the horses ran away. Another king also went hunting. His chariot was stopped and the horsed were tethered. The chariot got burned. One king had the horses, and the other had the chariot. If the two cooperated, they would be successful in restoring mobility.
Vali stole Sugreeva’s wife. Ravana stole Rama’s wife. If Sugreeva and Rama pledged friendship they could succeed in getting back both their wives.

Sugreeva brought the bundle of jewels dropped by Sita. Rama saw it and swooned. Lakshmana was asked to identify the jewels of Sita. Lakshmana said, “I do not know her jewels of the arms, ears, the head ornament, or her necklace. All that I can recognize are her ankle ornaments. I have never seen the face of my sister-in-law. All that I have seen daily are her feet.” Lakshmana is the greatest yogi. His mind is under perfect control. This statement of Lakshmana puts our country at the zenith of culture.
The ankle chains were not in the bundle. Rama would revive and again swoon at the sight of Sita’s saree whose piece was used to tie the bundle.

Sugreeva showed Rama the skeleton of the demon Dundubhi. Rama kicked it to a distance of 100 yojanas with his big toe. Sugreeva was not convinced of Rama’s strength because when Vali killed the demon and kicked the corpse, it was filled with flesh and was much heavier.
Sugreeva showed Rama 6 mighty trees. Rama felled them all with one arrow. The arrow returned to him.
Sugreeva challenged Vali to a fight, convinced of Rama’s ability to kill Vali. Vali came out to fight in spite of Tara, his wife advising him against it. He preferred to die at Rama’s hand.
Rama shot an arrow at Vali and made him fall. In his last breath, Vali demanded an explanation from Rama why he killed him stealthily.

Rama would never do anything against Dharma. We must understand clearly his rights and the justification of hiding behind a tree and shooting an arrow at Vali. Rama is king of the forest. Vali has stolen the kingdom and the wife of Sugreeva. “I am the servant of Bharata, who is now king. I killed you because you are wicked. You are a beast and may be killed stealthily as a hunter kills a beast. You have perpetrated evil.” Vali understood that Rama was righteous. He begged forgiveness and breathed his last. Vali deemed it an honor to die at Rama’s hand. Vali is also a great personage. Tara came running and wept at losing her husband. She begged Rama to kill her also. Rama consoled her and her son Angada. He taught her Vedanta and urged that the funeral rites be conducted.

Rama was invited to visit the kingdom of Kishkindha. Rama refused since he was in exile. Lakshmana was sent to the kingdom to perform the coronation of Sugreeva. Rama performed chaturmasya during the rainy season. Because of bad weather, their efforts at finding Sita now would be futile.

Sugreeva became a slave to luxury and forgot the promise given to Rama of rendering help in finding Sita. Hanuman cautioned Sugreeva. Lakshmana got angry at Sugreeva’s negligence in helping Rama. Rama also got upset and said, “Trees and rivers exist only to help others constantly. Despite all hurdles, the river keeps flowing. Cows give milk to help others. The calves do not drink all the milk. They merely get a taste and their stomachs are filled with other feed. This human body is meant only for serving others.” Many such wise sayings are found in the Ramayana.

Lakshmana was sent to Sugreeva with a message. He was furious. Sugreeva sent his wife Tara to pacify him. Sugreeva came to Rama and offered an apology. Crores of monkeys were summoned. A mighty army of monkeys got organized. Sugreeva sent four groups of monkeys in four directions to look for Sita.

Hanuman was called aside by Rama. Rama gave Hanuman His signet ring. He said, “Give this to Sita. She will then believe that you were sent by me.” Rama prayed to Hanuman, “You will certainly accomplish the mission. You are strong, O son of Wind”. This is a great mantra chanted by Rama.

When Rama Himself commands, where is any doubt that it will be accomplished? Tulasi Ramayana says, Hanuman held the ring tight between his teeth. Valmiki Ramayana says, he tied it in his garment.

The search began. They failed to find Sita. Swayamprabha, a celestial helped them. They all entered a cave, received hospitality and ended up at the seashore. They were lost for any clues on finding Sita and decided to kill themselves.
Sampati means, one who throws some knowledge at you.

Hearing the Vanaras singing the story of Rama, Sampati approached, hearing the mention of his brother Jatayu. Thus far the condor was considering eating the Vanaras. Now it decided to help them. Sampati told the Vanaras that Sita was in Lanka and that Ravana had kept her captive in Lanka. He gave them directions on how to proceed further.
Sampati, who was very old and whose wings were burned had lost his flying ability. Now he grew back his wings because he heard Rama’s story and rendered him help.

All the Vanaras were now wondering how to cross the ocean. Everyone weighed their strengths and found that none was equal to crossing the ocean. Jambavan knew that Hanuman alone was capable of flying across the ocean. Hanuman needs to be reminded of his strength periodically. Jambavan praised Hanuman and reminded him of his capabilities. Hanuman then decided to expand his size and attempt to fly across the ocean.
Mentally Hanuman first crossed the ocean and had the darshan of Mother Sita.

Valmiki dedicated an entire section of the Ramayana to Hanuman. It is the Sundara Kanda. Sundara means beautiful. It is indeed the most beautiful section of the story.

Sri Guru Datta

Day 5, August 15, Sundara Kanda

In Sundara Kanda everything is beautiful. Valmiki demonstrates through a monkey what real beauty is. What we think of as monkey is the Supreme Soul. Sundara in Sanskrit means not just visual beauty or beauty of sound as in good verbal description, but much more. Sunda means Liberty. He who liberates is Hanuman. today is Indian Independence Day. Scientifically and spiritually, India must progress and set an example to the world. We must serve the country and repay our debt to the land.

Yesterday we learned of the pledge of friendship between Sugriva and Rama. Rama gave Hanuman his signet ring to give to Sita. Sita was not found. Sampati gave clues as to her whereabouts. Jambavan encouraged Hanuman to show his strength and cross the ocean. Hanuman assumed a huge form and looked for a runway to take off from. He found Mahendra Mountain as a suitable spot. Sundara Kanda is the Science of Yoga. Mahendra Mountain. is Mooladhara chakra. Lanka is our body. Mostly it is water. We are in the middle of water. On the top of head is Sita in Sahasrara where there is no grief.

24,000 verses cannot be simplified. If such detail cannot be followed, how can the condensed essence be conveyed. What is the symbolism of the characters? Sita is Nature. Ravana is Pollution. He is ten-headed. He once wanted to lift off Mt. Kailasa itself. He placed his 20 arms under it. Ways to destroy Nature. Quarrying mountains and destroying them. Balance of nature is being spoiled today. At Ravana’s act, Parvati became agitated and held on to Shiva. Hiva pressed down with his left foot’s big toes. Ravana screamed in pain.

Because of the scream, Shiva called him Ravana, sound or air pollution that abducts Mother Nature. Hanuman is the son of pure air. He removed pollution and saved Mother Nature Sita.

Hanuman inhaled deeply, held his breath, placed his arms on his waist, assured his friends of a speedy return, like an arrow, he would go to his target with not detours or stopping for a pause.

I will search for Sita everywhere including in heaven. I will tie Ravana to my tail, and bring him back. or I will drag Lanka back here with my tail. It is my penance to complete my mission.

At an auspicious moment, Hanuman took a leap. Visualize that daring act. Travel with him, with devotion and energy. He lifted off. With the weight of his body, the hill splintered into pieces. The Lanka of those times does not exist now. Earth has moved since then. The trees got uprooted and flew along with him. Like a line between heaven and earth, like a huge flying ship. His tail waved in the breeze like a flag announcing Rama’s victory. 10 yojanas long was his shadow on the waters of the ocean.

The Vanaras stood on one foot and prayed for Hanuman’s success. Hanuman prayed to Guru, Rama and all the deities. Sishupala Vadha is a work that explains how prayer and effort are both essential. They are like pen and paper for a poet. He received cooperation from the sun, air and the ocean. For any good deed, all the five elements will help. The god of the ocean, Samudra, or Sagara belongs to the dynasty of Rama. He asked Mainaka Mt. to rise out of the waters and offer a place of rest to Hanuman. Please help me. One should offer timely help. At this request, Mainaka rose and prayed to Hanuman to take rest. Hanuman viewed the rising mountain as a hurdle and hit him with his chest. Mainaka spoke and explained that he was a friend. There is a scientific secret. Mountains used to fly. Indra to balance nature, cut off their wings. Because your father, the wind God blew strongly, I fell into the ocean and my wings got saved. I am here to help.

Any hungry creature that comes to you at meal time is an honoured guest. You must give food. Any help received must be reciprocated. Please give me a chance to offer help. Hanuman said, I cannot rest until I find Sita. I have taken a vow. Samudra also took a form and the two of them praised Hanuman for his determination.

The second chakra, the hurdle of Mainaka. Surasa, the serpent Mother was requested to obstruct Hanuman’s path to test Hanuman’s resourcefulness and to show the world his expertise and intelligence. Hanuman recognized her as a deity and not a demon. He prayed to her. Surasa said, the deities have granted you as food for me. Enter my mouth. Hanuman said, I will see Sita, and give news of her welfare to Rama. Then I will return and be your meal. Surasa did not agree. Hanuman became tiny, entered the huge mouth of Surasa and exited quickly safely.

4 qualities are essential for success. Courage, determination, resourcefulness, and skill. These Hanuman possesses.
Surasa is the Manipuraka chakra.
Now a force was pulling him back by grabbing his shadow. No matter how hard he tried, Hanuman could not move forward. He looked down and found that the demon mentioned by Sugriva, the shadow grabber was here. The fourth obstruction, Anahata is now troubling him. Simhika was the demon. each of them increased their size. Anjaneya suddenly turned small as a mosquito and entered the demon’s heart and killed her. She is the mother of Rahu. Hanuman crossed the ocean. He came to the region of the throat, Vishuddha, the high Lamba Mountain. He landed there. Lanka was visible. Huge, and beautiful. It was built by the celestials and stolen by Ravana.

Not even a fly can enter this land without permission, I must wait for an opportune moment to enter Lanka, Hanuman decided. He was an ambassador and had to exercise caution. Reaching the finish line and not properly completing is a waste of all the effort. Hanuman remained there. The one who is a scholar is good. The one who ‘thinks’ he is a scholar is a dangerous fool.

At the Visuddha chakra, the passage narrows and the path is constricted. So the traveller on the yogic path has to navigate carefully from there.

Hanuman reduced his size drastically. Found the compound wall. He tried to jump the wall. He heard a thundering voice that said, Stop. I am Lankini. You have no visa. You cannot enter Lanka. H humbly said, I am just a small monkey here for sightseeing as a visitor. Please permit me to enter for a quick visit. She hit him. Hanuman got angry. Knowing she is a woman, Hanuman hit her, not with full strength. Lankini got her memory of a past life where Brahma told her that Rama’s ambassador will come as a monkey to destroy Lanka. His touch will give you salvation. She allowed H to enter. H put his left foot forward, this foot I place on the head of Ravana. One must put the right foot forward as you enter a new home or any sacred place. It is very important. We have a master eye. There is a difference between the right and the left foot. R and L are not the same. Some are right-handed and some are left-handed. Enter an enemy’s home or country with left foot forward.

All are chanting the Vedas in Lanka. All pujas are performed. How to gain victory here? But devotion is lacking. People do rituals with harmful intentions. Temporary success may result but in the end they will not succeed. Black magic is one such. It does no permanent harm.

The full moon rose. Hanuman said, okay, it will give me light to see the city better by night. We always seek happiness and comfort. Sita is Bliss. Hanuman is searching for Her. Permanent Happiness.

Hanuman searched the homes of all demons. Nothing auspicious was happening anywhere. Only from one home were emanating sacred names of Vishnu. Sacred symbols were visible outside the home. This is not in Valmiki Ramayana. Vibheeshana was there, Ravana’s brother. He was noble and devout. Hanuman spoke with him. Vibheeshana said, I will show you Sita. You show me Rama. They mutually agreed. Hanuman entered the royal chambers and looked for Sita.

Suddenly he sensed a nice aroma of Vadas – urad snack. He knew that a kitchen was nearby. He hesitated to enter the building. It was a floating aircraft. Hanuman was astonished to see it being held aloft by an army of demons. The Wind God enticed Hanuman to enter. A huge cot had a huge body lying on it that looked like a mountain of blackgram lentils. He was snoring like thunder, and looked like an intoxicated elephant. Even Hanuman was a bit frightened at the sight. Vada mala we offer to Hanuman. We get urad dal, soak, grind, fry in hot oil and offer to Hanuman because the sight of Ravana reminded Hanuman of urad dal. That is the reason we offer vada garland to Hanuman.

A beautiful and pure woman was seen lying on a gem-studded bed. Hanuman thought he had found Sita. He kissed his tail in joy. He jumped with ecstasy and climbed on a pillar and looked again. He showed his monkey nature. Until the results come, don’t distribute sweets after writing an exam. then, Hanuman thought again. How can Sita, separated from Rama be sleeping so peacefully in Ravana’s chambers? He hit himself on the head and decided this must be Mandodari, Ravana’s queen.

Hanuman searched the entire island of Lanka. Wastefully I promised that I will find Sita. Sita is not here, how will I face my friends with my failure? I will remain here itself. I will just eat a fruit that might accidentally fall into my mouth. Why should I live at all? I am miserable. I should shake off my disappointment. I have to remain happy and continue my efforts. This is great advice given by Hanuman to all of us. Give up sorrow and continue searching. He sat on a security wall and meditated.

Listen to good music, to Zodiac tunes of Swamiji. Don’t make hasty decisions. Sit calmly and think when there is confusion and dejection.

Now Yoga Anjaneya Swami has now turned into Dhyana Anjaneya Swami. He opened his eyes and remembered that he has forgotten to search inside the Ashoka Vana. Sampati had told him that. He had forgotten that detail. He offered prayers to Rama and all the deities.

In the Sahasrara is the beautiful garden. Sita Mother resides there. She drenches her devotees with nectarine bliss.
Ajna was the entrance to Lanka with permission from Lankini. Hanuman climbed the Shimshupa tree that was near a flowing river. The tree with betel leaf vines helped to cover him, so he could hide successfully.
He saw a yogini, a woman with eyes glowing with intense brightness. He decided that this was Mother Sita. Hanuman saw Rama wearing a disguise. Today he is seeing Sita remaining in hiding. If he suddenly appears before her, she may get frightened and may harm herself.
Hanuman saw her celestial beauty in spite of disheveled attire.

Early in the morning, there was a commotion in the garden. A huge man was approaching, surrounded by women. He was drunk, teetering, spitting, with clothes falling off. Hanuman knew that this was Ravana, whom he had seen the night before, sleeping like a mountain on his bed. Hanuman decided to see what was going to happen. Ravana demanded from Sita for her decision to marry him. Sita treated Ravana like a blade of grass. She placed a straw before her and spoke to it. She was so brave and confident. Hanuman felt that she was the right match for Rama. Ravana threatened to make her his breakfast if she did not change her mind. Sita could not hear Ravana’s verbal abuse of Rama.

Trijata woke up with the disturbance. Rama said to Sita, let us give away in charity all our possessions before leaving for the forest. Trijata, a man came. Rama gave him a stick and said, throw this stick as far as you can and I will give you charity of cows to that extent. As a result of that charity, now Trijata, the demon in Lanka helps Sita. Her dreams always come true. She told her companions of her terrible dream of the destruction of Lanka and Ravana. She told the others to begin respecting Sita. They did and Sita gave them assurance of protection.

Hanuman wanted now to accost Sita and speak to her. What language to use? He decided to use Sanskrit, the language of the gods. He began by praising Rama. Ramayana, as sung by Hanuman is this. Reading or chanting this, or chanting Sundara Kanda, gives the fruit of reading the entire Ramayana, it is declared.

Sita heard the singing and was surprised. Is this an illusion? Am I dreaming? How can I dream when I do not even fall asleep? She looked up and saw two dazzling eyes. She got frightened. Hanuman reduced his spiritual glow and in a soft form approached her. Sita receded in doubt and fear. Hanuman told Sita of Rama’s grief at losing Sita. He again narrated Rama’s story. Sita was surprised at the friendship between men and monkeys. To win her confidence, Hanuman gave Sita Rama’s ring. She was overjoyed to hold it and touched it to her entire body. She gave in return her hair ornament and confident in Hanuman an episode known only to herself and Rama concerning a crow.

Sita prayed to Hanuman to tell Rama to come soon and rescue her. She chanted the powerful mantra, Tvamasmin karya niryoge — a maha mantra initiated by Swamiji to all the devotees. Chant this mantra daily, especially in the presence of Karya Siddhi Hanuman. It assures success. Sita gave Hanuman her blessing. Hanuman got ready to return to Rama but wanted to display his strength and power to the residents of Lanka. He destroyed the garden with Sita’s permission.

He sat high up on a wall and shouted the glories of Rama and announced that he is Rama’s servant.

Hanuman thought in his mind, Just this one sin of stealing Sita has made futile all the powers earned by Ravana by all his penance, scholarship, and power. Ravana wanted to kill Hanuman. Vibheeshana stopped him saying it is unethical. Ravana then decided to insult Hanuman by setting fire to his tail.

Hanuman returned and gave news in detail to his friends. They all stopped at Madhu Vana to celebrate, and then returned to Rama. Saw Sita, Hanuman said to Rama. Rama felt like nectar was poured into his ears. He blessed all who listen to this story to benefit from all blessings. He gave a surprise gift to Hanuman. We will find out what it was, tomorrow.

Jai Sri Ram.

Day 6, August 16, Yuddha Kanda on Varalakshmi Vratam Day

Today the Bhoomi Puja was performed for the Temple for Lord Subrahmanya. A temple construction confers benefits for the whole world. Any flaws in one’s astrological chart will be alleviated by the grace of Lord Subrahmanya. He grants good health, marriage, progeny, and relief from difficulties. Even if you donate the worth of one brick, even that gives you immense benefit. We never can imagine the worth of each brick. We can never underestimate the lasting value of our charities. Everyone should help to their best extent.

Mother Sita praised Hanuman in the Sundara Kanda, “You crossed the ocean as if it were as easy as a cow stepping over a small puddle!” That is why we describe Him as “Goshpadee krita vaaraasim.” Sita saw His golden radiance at the time of sunrise and addressed Him as a mountain of gold. Hence we describe Him as “Kanchanaadri kamaneeya vigraham”. He effortlessly crossed the ocean and took away the fire of Sita’s sorrow and burnt the entire city of Lanka with it. Sita felt relieved of her grief. On the Indian Independence Day, the Vanaras felt free and gleefully returned to Rama. Reading Sundara Kanda gives the benefit of studying the entire Ramayana.

Yuddha Kanda begins with the word, Shrutvaa, referring to the Veda. Rama vowed that He, himself would kill Ravana and bring Sita back. Yuddha means effort. How can I repay Hanuman for the huge favor that he has done me?
You should give what is most dear to you, not what is useless for you. Giving away what is trash for you is very wrong. Sri Narahari Teertha Swami (Swamiji’s father) likes Rava Laddu, Torch light, Umbrella, and so on. Swamiji distributes these to everyone. Always give in honor of your parents, their favorite things.

Rama said, only this body belongs to me. I give this to you in embrace. Very happily He gave His everything to Hanuman. A true devotee is happy simply to see God. Hanuman was overjoyed. He received the ultimate gift from Rama.
Rama began to wonder whether the task ahead of reaching Lanka, defeating Ravana and bringing Sita back are really feasible, after listening to the detailed description given by Hanuman of what he saw at Lanka. Rama was testing Sugriva’s determination to help him. Drowned in grief, we must never give up our duty due to a lack of confidence. Sorrow should be given up. In my childhood days, Swamiji was frequently heard telling his devotees, “Give away to me all your bad habits.”

One has to sometimes put on an angry act. Even if you are peaceful by nature, you have to show anger, Rama, said Sugriva. Rama felt happy to hear this. Let us proceed, he said confidently. He set an auspicious date, Vijaya Muhoortham, his birth, his final coronation, his intended coronation by Dasaratha, killing of Ravana, all happened at such a Victory time. This is Vijaya year. May this Ramayana discourse bring good fortune to all.
An immense army of Vanaras began its march towards Lanka.

Vibheeshana in the meantime gave sincere words of advice to Ravana, to follow Dharma, to return Sita to Rama, to avoid total destruction of himself and the entire kingdom. We must enjoy hundreds of autumn seasons. We must always think positive and be enthusiastic about future life. The moment Sita has set foot in Lanka, because of your wicked move, all bad omens are appearing in Lanka. Ravana was adamant in rejecting all his good words. Another demon suggested to Ravana that he should take Sita by force. But Ravana remembered the curse that he was under, that molesting a woman would at once result in death.

The mind becomes perverted when time for destruction approaches. Indrajit interrupted the conversation between the brothers and showed disrespect towards him. Ravana told Vibheeshana to leave the kingdom. Immediately Vibheeshana left with his close companions and flew up into the air. He reached the place on the ocean shore where Rama was camped. He sought amnesty. Rama was advised by all his supporters to reject the plea of the enemy. Hanuman alone, when asked for his opinion, told Rama that Vibheeshana is a devout soul (not mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana). Sometimes one has to trust one’s instinct, by going beyond intellectual reasoning. Hanuman advised that Vibheeshana may be given amnesty and that his help would be valuable. Rama also declared that he had made a vow to give protection to anyone who sought his refuge. Rama has pledged that he would always give support to those who surrender to him.
Rejecting amnesty to Vibheeshana or even to Ravana, if he should surrender, would be against his vow. If such a situation should occur, Rama said that he would give away the kingdom of Ayodhya to Ravana, since he had already promised to give Lanka to Vibheeshana.

How to cross the ocean? Rama prayed to the ocean to give way. The ocean did not oblige. Rama got angry and got ready to employ the Brahma astra against the ocean to subdue it by drying it up. The ocean receded as if he were running away, causing a tsunami in Lanka. It frightened Ravana. Rama did not release the astra, since the ocean was showing fear. The ocean took a human form and explained to Rama that he was obliged to his kingdom for his existence and would certainly cooperate.

Samudra, the ocean god suggested that Rama get a bridge built by Nala. A demon spy, Suka, came and was caught. Rama let him go with a message to Ravana to get ready for battle. The spy described to Ravana the immensity of the army of Rama. What a wonder that Rama built a bridge a 100 yojanas long across the ocean. What a symbol of love! It is unfortunate that in spite of proofs it is suggested that it should be destroyed to facilitate the passage of ships to Sri Lanka. It is our duty to protect it. Everyone must voice a support for its protection.

The 1st day 14 yojanas, the 2nd day 20 yojanas, and so forth, rapidly the bridge was constructed. In just 5 days, an 800 mile bridge was built. Many rocks were sinking but some were floating, not in Valmiki Ramayana, but those rocks that had Rama’s name inscribed on them, floated. Quality control person was Hanuman. He touched and inscribed the name with his nails and they floated. Even in Mysore ashram and the Bangalore ashram we have a couple of these floating rocks.

One squirrel wanted to help in the construction project. It thought of the need for sand. It rolled in the sand and dropped the grains by shaking itself where sand was needed. Rama noticed its sweet gesture and blessed the squirrel. Rama drew his fingers upon its back and drew 3 lines symbolizing the A, U, M sounds of OM.

Ravana heard that the bridge construction was completed in 5 days. He became anxious and sent spies again. Rama punished them but set them free with a message to Ravana. “Show me your might, based on which you stole Sita using a disguise, like a coward.” Ravana observed the army of Rama from upon a terrace. His spies pointed out to the king all the warriors in the army. Ravana got angry and had them beaten up. Sugriva jumped and began fighting against Ravana. Sugriva pushed down Ravana’s crown and returned. Rama was upset at this impulsive and unplanned act of Sugriva. He was pleased, but cautioned him to safeguard his safety. Rama declared to Lakshmana his confidence at victory and divided the army very strategically. Except for Rama and Lakshmana no one else would be in a human form in the army. None of the demons would assume a monkey form because it would be beneath their dignity.

Rama represents victory.
Angada was sent as an ambassador of peace to Ravana as a last attempt to avoid war. Using illusory tactics you abducted Sita, O Ravana. Use that illusion upon me, if you dare, and I will destroy all demonic qualities from this earth. Demon is not by race, but by nature. Rama proclaimed this. Vibheeshana belonged to the race, but his nature was noble and hence he was spared. Even now, if you return Sita to me, was can be avoided. Singing the victory of Rama, Angada went to Ravana. The message of Ramayana is: Be like Rama and his friends. Never be like Ravana or his followers. Angada was beaten up. He returned to Rama. Rama got ready for battle. Up to now it is the preparation for war. A mighty battle took place. Indrajit employed the Naga Pasha (Serpents bound Rama and Lakshmana). Indrajit frightened Sita showing their helpless state. But a demon friend of Sita assured her that Rama’s face still glowed with life force. Eagle Garuda came as a friend of Rama and released them. Rama honored him for his timely help.
By the power of Shakti weapon, Lakshmana swooned. Rama lost confidence. Sushena, a physician suggested the bringing of 4 herbs from the Himalayas. Hanuman got ready to go bring them. He searched for them, and could not locate them. He lifted the entire hill back to Lanka from the Himalayas. Lakshmana revived. Remembering Hanuman, the life saver, and chanting the Sanjeevani mantra, will restore health to the critically ill. The dead Vanaras were also revived by the use of the herbs.

The wondrous battle between Rama and Ravana is indescribable. It is incomparable. Ravana got exhausted and fell to the ground. Rama told him to go rest up and return the following day to continue the fight with a better chariot and more powerful weapons. Rama said it would be an insult to his valor to take advantage of the situation. Ravana was taken by his charioteer to a safe place. Ravana verbally abused him. He is a personification of ignorance and bad behavior. Truth always wins. Dharma always wins.

Now Kumbhakarna, Ravana’s brother, the one who sleeps for six months in a year, was woken up with a lot of trouble, and called to fight. Be enticing with aroma of food, they succeeded in waking him up. He got up, ate and fell asleep again. Finally after many such repeated efforts, he was told of what had happened. The Vanaras saw his approach and began running away. Kumbhakarna advised Ravana to do the right thing. He scolded Ravana. Ravana did not budge from his stand. Kumbhakarna preferred to die at the hands of Rama, who followed the advice of Vibheeshana on how to kill this mountain-like warrior.

Again Lakshmana swooned while fighting against Indrajit. Hanuman brought the Sanjeevani hill again and revived Lakshmana. Victory to Hanuman! How to kill Indrajit who fights an illusory battle with magic tactics? Rama also has to use illusion, which is against his nature. Vibheeshana gave Rama of a special ritual that Indrajit is performing to attain magical powers. Rama was advised to interrupt the ritual to prevent his attaining the powers. You must always prepare before commencing a ritual and not interrupt it in the interim. You must not keep getting up in the middle to get forgotten items.

Vibheeshana was scolded for disclosing his secret, by Indrajit. Lakshmana killed Indrajit. Sushena used herbs to heal everyone injured in the battlefield, on the side of Rama. Ravana had to enter the battlefield. He took a make-believe chopped head of Rama to Sita to frighten and deceive her. But the trick did not work.

Rama felt frustrated at not being able to kill Ravana in spite of all his efforts. Aditya Hridayam along with the performance of Surya Namaskarams is highly beneficial. Even atheists pray to the Sun and hence obtain the power for success. At least chant the 12 names of Sun God daily. This is so easy and can be done so fast. Do the 12 Surya Namaskarams (yoga exercises) along with remembering these 12 names. It gives great health benefits. Rama belongs to the Sun dynasty. Sage Agastya initiated Rama into this prayer and advised that he should pray to his ancestor, the Sun.

Rama worshipped the Sun. Indra appeared before Rama and gifted him a great chariot and a charioteer. Rama used his celestial weapons and using the strategy suggested by Vibheeshana, Rama killed Ravana. Prayer to the Sun was responsible for Rama’s success in battle. Even if clouds are covering the Sun, still offer your prayers.
Vibheeshana wept for the misfortune of Ravana. When Rama told him to stop weeping and to perform his duty of performing the last rites. Vibheeshana suddenly changed his heart and refused to offer services to a wicked person. Rama gave the wonderful advice that once a person is dead, enmity should be given up. Never speak ill of a dead person. Rama said he himself would do the funeral rites, if Vibheeshana failed to do it. Vibheeshana agreed to do his duty. Rama consoled Mandodari, Ravana’s queen.

Hanuman was sent to bring Sita. She came walking slowly. Sita is Goddess Mahalakshmi Herself. Today is Sri Varalakshmi Vratam, an auspicious day when Rama and Sita get together.
Nobody knew what to expect, how the two would react at the meeting of two noble souls after a long parting. Rama slowly raised his face and without even looking at Sita’s face, said,
As a man, I have performed my duty of destroying one who did a wicked act. I kept my promise of killing Ravana. I did not do this for you. I did it to protect dharma, regardless of the person that was abducted by Ravana. People will speak ill of you for having stayed at Ravana’s place for a year. You may not live with me. You may live anywhere else that is of your choice.

Everyone was aghast at this gesture and speech of Rama. Sita was acutely miserable at Ashoka Vana for a year. Rama experienced all that agony in this one instant. Sita did not expect this from Rama. Had she known this would happen, she would not have come here with Hanuman. I could have burnt Ravana to ashes. But since I wished you to satisfy your vow of killing Ravana, I spared Ravana. As a wife, I had to respect your honor and your pledge. Are you insane, Rama, she thought. Now Sita turned into Goddess Kali.
Ananda Ramayana says a servant of Sita was the illusory Sita whom Ravana had abducted. The real Sita was not touched by Ravana.

Sita commanded Lakshmana to light a fire. Rama and Sita mutually have respect and trust in one another. Sita prayed to the Fire God to protect and declare her chastity. Rama never asked Sita to jump in the fire. Dharma is most important for Rama. It is very difficult to understand the supreme level of virtue and righteousness of Rama. May all the deities protect me, Sita prayed.

Guru gave bananas to His several disciples and told them to eat the fruit where no one is looking. Everyone ate their fruit, except one. One, in a dark room, one under sheets, and so on. Only one declared that the conscience is watching all the time, everywhere. He alone received initiation from the Guru.

You are God Himself, Sita is Lakshmi. You have forgotten, Rama. You are Vishnu. We prayed that you should be born to King Dasaratha. Please accept this Sita, complete your reign and return to heaven, the gods prayed to Rama.
Rama required this declaration of Sita’s chastity and of Rama’s divinity. Fire God brought Sita and handed over with words of caution, Never ever hurt Sita’s feelings. Treat her with honor. She is absolutely pure and flawless. I am commanding you to receive her hand. It was as if they were married again. Rama held Sita’s hand. She glowed with radiance. Rama said, Sita, you know my heart. To let the world know, I acted like one who does not know of your purity. I will never part from Sita. For the sake of reputation, I had to act this way.

The Pushpaka aircraft was brought by Vibheeshana. Rama put Sita on the plane. All the Vanaras wanted to go along. King Dasaratha appeared in the sky and gave his blessing.

All the warriors on Rama’s side were restored to life and health. Sita recommended that everyone should be taken along to Ayodhya. That special aircraft had place for everyone plus one, always. Sugriva, and Vibheeshana also came. They stopped at the hermitage of Sage Bharadwaja and received his hospitality on their way home. Hanuman was sent to take the message of their arrival to Bharatha who was eagerly waiting for Rama’s return. The aircraft landed. All the brothers resumed their royal attire, giving up the matted locks. Rama entered Ayodhya and paid his respects to the royal mothers. The coronation took place with holy waters from sacred rivers and lakes. The sacred crown was placed on Rama’s head. All the worlds rejoiced at the occasion.

Uttara Kanda is next. Some people do not narrate it because Rama and Sita part again. But it also shows the divinity of Rama. The phala shruti, the benefit of listening to the Ramayana should be mentioned.

Any faults or sins committed against parents get canceled by studying the Ramayana. Those who publish and spread the teachings of this sacred scripture will be highly blessed. Ramayana grants prosperity, comforts, happiness with family and friends, good health, long life, good reputation, and a good mind and friendship and cooperation. Those who listen to this story with faith that Rama and Sita are divine beings will receive all blessings. May Sadguru’s blessings shower upon all listeners of this sacred narration.

Victory to Sita, Rama, Lakshmana, and Lord Hanuman. Victory to Sadgurudeva.

Jaya Guru Datta

Day 7, August 17, Uttara Kanda

Pray for me that I give 108 times 7 day discourses on the Ramayana. Encourage children to go to temples and listen to spiritual discourses. Give up TV watching at least one day a week. Children should learn spirituality from Guru, not google. I place faith in my Guru that He will make me help in the mission of protecting Dharma. Please pray that I succeed. Ramayana gives all good fortune, it is equivalent to the Veda, it destroys the sins. Have the departed souls listen to the Ramayana for their smooth upward journey.

The childless will beget good children. The poor become rich. Relief is obtained from all sins. Even if one small section of the Ramayana is studied, immense benefit is obtained. Because that will make the devotee continue to read it. Those who teach the Ramayana should be offered items that they require, as gifts, the scriptures advice us, thinking of the person as a representative of Sri Rama Himself.

Ramayana grants a long life. We believe in future and past births. Our spiritual teachings are based on the firm belief of past and future births. How we balance properly the two, the past and the future, and remain straight during the present lifetime is indicated by the middle part of a balance that remains straight.

Ra is the living syllable of Om Namo Narayanaya
Ma is the living syllable of Om Namassivaya. The essence of the two powerful mantras is the RAMA mantra.

Lord Shiva made divisions of the scriptures and one hundred crore verses were left. After distributing, 99 thousand verses were left. 32 syllables in each verse in the Anushtup meter or chandas, in the Ramayana. Our teeth are also divided like that 16 up and 16 down. He distributed among 333 multiples of dieties and 2 syllables were left finally. Shiva kept those two, Ra and ma for himself. He initiates devotees with this mantra in Kasi, Benares. Visit if you can, if not, have darshan of Lord Shiva wherever Guru has set His foot. Rama mantra ever grants victory and liberation.

The fruit of visiting great sacred mountains, holy rivers, and pilgrimage centers is obtained by studying the Ramayana. When children interrupt mothers listening to the Ramayana, honking the car, saying, Ra amma, ra amma (come on, mom), the mothers should say, “Ram Ram” (we won’t come, we won’t come).

Ramayana is the most ancient spiritual literary work. The first and foremost, Adi Kavya. Composed by sage Valmiki in the Treta Yuga. Those who listen to it become like the companions of Vishnu, like Garuda, Sudarshana and others to ever remain close to the Lord. Prosperity increases and all good wishes are fulfilled.

Never doubt whether this incident of Ramayana has really happened or not. Have firm faith that this is an absolutely true story. One must pray for the welfare of the ancestral spirits remembering them for many past generations. Listening to the Ramayana grants them great benefits. One must never incur the curse of departed souls by neglecting to do things that would benefit them. Ramayana is supremely great. It grants the strength of Dharma of Lord Vishnu Himself. Sage Valmiki was divinely blessed to compose this ultimately great treasure. Vishnu’s Dharma will flourish as long as the Ramayana story remains alive among humanity. It is very commendable and essential to print the Ramayana and distribute it amongst people. May penance increase amongst all, is the command and blessing given by Sage Valmiki. Prostrations to Lord Rama. O Lord, please, always remain with us and protect us.

Next week the story of Lord Krishna will be presented in this same manner in a public venue in Eluru. Please enjoy. May the blessings of Sri Swamiji and Lord Rama be showered upon all those who have participated in this effort of these successful discourses.

Our most grateful and reverential prostrations at the divine lotus feet of Sri Sri Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji and Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji!

Jai Sriram. Jai Sitaram. Jai Hanuman.
