The discourse on the glory of Devi Bhagavata was continued by Pujya Sri Swamiji on the first day of Pushya Navaratri Celebrations on 8th Jan 2012.

Today onwards we are going discuss the story of the Goddess of the universe. Mother of Mothers, the mother of thrimuthis. In veda, it is said, Matrudeva bhava. She is called Lalitha Parabhattarika, Lalitha Parameswari.

Mother is Adiparashakti. We should never say that we don’t have energy. All the living organism are bestowed with energy. The whole creation is nothing but ENERGY. Science also says the same thing. There is no place where there is no energy. We don’t know how many more universes are there. And the way to adore this embodiment of the universal energy existing in different forms and names. It is only Bhagavata which explains the details of the same.
We have to control breath. Fire is seen but not its heat. We cannot find out the energy of five elements. In the same manner we cannot find depth of the history of Janani. There is no doubt in saying that the history of Devi gives us liberation. We should listen to the narration of mythology once & again. Repeatedly we have to listen to Ramayana & Bhagavata for various reasons. We must listen to some of the very important points. We have to listen to the discourse with utmost diligence paying attention to each and every word & sentence. We get to know many secrets of the sacred text.
God is full of good qualities which are divine and unlimited. Similarly Devi is the mother of 14 worlds which in turn have many more planets & celestial bodies, like we have friends of friends. Each friend is one planet. The story of Devi gives us new thoughts & we get answers to some long pending questions only when we hear with utmost devotion & diligence. If a person says that he already listened to Devi Bhagavata and does not remember, his body and his trips to those discourses are mere waste.
Vyasa is a great sage and is the writer of all our puranas. We are submitting our reverences to sage Vyasa.
We can feel the very existence of Vyasa at the time of Bhagavata or Maha Bharata. Vyasa experienced the presence of all the incarnations & He himself stood as character in all the stories with a staunch will. He was witness of the own plans and statements like how the Scientists demonstrate their own discoveries & inventions on themselves. Vyasa had taken the poison and poison & Nectar too. He gave us all the Mythology and Mythological stories which instill moral and ethic among people to lead a disciplined life. He is the most enlightened person. We submit our sincere prayers to Vyasa Bhagavata.
He is a Brahma without four faces.
He is Shiva without three eyes.
He is Vishunu without four hands.
Those who memorize Vyasa will be blessed with good poetic skill and good oratory. we should not be chatter boxes. Whatever you speak it gets recorded and the recorded good or bad comes back to you. We will memorize Jaganmatha.

People across the Globe feel that they should be born in Naymisarnyam. This country of ours is the place of celebrations.
Once in Naisharanya,people were performing yaga. Suta maha muni went there at that time. Such events need no invitation. Some people attend only happy occasions. If some body is performing some events against Dharma, we should not attend. For good occasions, we have to go on our own and participate too in the occasions. The whole world will be blessed with prosperity & peace. We have to listen to the divine names of Lord Vishnu, Brahma & Shiva.

All sages were happy to see suta muni. They felt that their yaga is successful. When his story is told, our happiness knows no bounds.
Suta Muni felt very happy. They all requested Suta to narrate Devi Bhagavata. Later Vyasa Bhagavan narrated Devi Bhagvata for nine days. In Dwapara Yuga, Krishna was blamed of stealing samanthaka mani. Lord Krishna immediately went to the forest in search of samanthaka mani. Krishna’s parents and all and other people were worried as Krishna did not come back soon. At that time Vyasa Bhagawan narrated Devi Bhagavatam for nine days. On the ninth day Lord Krishna returned successfully with samanthakamani.
Once there was a king who had no children. Vasistha made him perfoms Putra kamesthi yaga. King wanted a son. But the queen wanted a daughter.A daughter was born. King was unhappy. He was disturbed & performed another yagna to be blessed with a son. But again he was blessed with another daughter. Kings’ sankalpa is very strong. Then Vasisitha advised king to pray Lord Shiva to be blessed with a son. He performed koti bilvarchana.

After this prayer the second daughter was changed into a son, Sudhvika who became a learned Man & a warrior. He went for hunting. He reached mountain along with his friends. They left their horses and walked into the forest where they were all changed into ladies. That was a curse given by Lord Shiva. They entered the forest. They became more beautiful. Kuja looked at her & married mainly through Drishti /looks. She delivered a child later. Vasistha asked her to pray for Lord Shiva.
He was blessed that he will be one month as male and one month as female .
Then she prayed to jaganmatha for nine days and with Her grace she was totally changed into a Man. Slowly all the friends of Sreedhavi also were changed into Men with the divine blessings of Jagan Mata.

When there was a discussion between Suta, Subrahmanya & Hayagreeva . details of future happenings which were going to take place in Krita, Treta,Dwapara and Kali Yugas. The benefits of doing “Parayana” or Nama Japa were also discussed at that time.The attempt to discuss the glory of Devi Bhagavata is like an attempt made to count the sand paricles on a sea shore. All future happenings were discussed in Naimisharayana. They do not reveal what is going to happen. All great people experience the glory.
The result of Nama Japa for various numbers/counts was declared at that time. That is why Pujya Sri Swamiji insists on a particular number for every Nama .
The Goddess tells everybody not to be in illusion. Devi Bhagavata imparts us everything through small and simple stories. Goddess is making us narrate Devi Bhagavata. She herself made this stage in Vijayawada Ashrama. She initiates the glory to the devotees Herself.

Listening to Sri Devi Bhagavata puts a full stop to all the uneventful incidents. The sage Suta explained the glory of Devi Bhagavata. They requested to narrate Revati & Udhava.

Ages ago Sage Ruthuvakku was blessed with son . He was born at the end of Revati star (Gandanta Kalam) a faulty time. Hence he becam very notorious. The defect starts from the womb and from the time of formation of an embryo and the growth of the foetus.
Ruthuvakku and his wife fell ill as they were worried about their son .One day sage Garga arrived and told the reason for the notorious nature of their son. It was because of the bad time during the end of Revati star. The most powerful Ruthuvakku cursed Revati star which fell on a mountain. A girl was born from Revati that fallen star. As the Revati was born, the boy was set right and became normal.
The girl who emerged from Revati star and called Revati was brought up by Pramacha Mahamuni and she attained a marriageable age. Sage Pramacha tried to get a suitable match for her. Agni deva declared that a king by name uddhava comes & marries Revati. Eventually Uddhava arrived at Pramacha’s house and enquired whether any body was there at home addressing Revati as DEAR ! Pramacha sage was happy that he called her “Priya”. Sage announced that Uddhava should marry his daughter. Then Revati also expressed her wish that she should be married in a Rvati star. Pramacha created another Revati star to perform their marriage.
Uddhava expressed his wish that his child should rule one Manvantara. Later Uddhava listened to Devi Bhagavata for five times and was blessed with a son. In one life time of Uddhava, Devi Bhagavata played an important role two ways. Once in changing Uddhava from notorious to good personality and second time in blessing him with a son who ruled the 5th Manvantara.

Those who do parayana or read one shloka or one line in one shloka of Devi Bhagavata will get their wishes fulfilled.
After listening to the story of Uddhava, all sages felt very happy and prayed to Devi.
The Bhagavatha is called Bgagavathi.
Bhagavathi:-
When Brahma went to Lord Vishnu, He was in deep meditation. When Lord Vishnu opened his eyes,Brahma asked Him as to who He was meditating upon. Lord Vishnu said “you are the creator, I am the ruler, and Shiva is the destroyer”. This is what we have been thinking of. But above all of us, there is one Goddess. SriMata who is guiding us. She is Adiparashksti. She is making us perform all these duties of ours.

“But for this Shakti swarupini. We would not have been performing these duties. Hence I am meditating upon the Goddess.” Said Lord Shiva.
1) I could bring an end to the disasters of Madhu and Kaitabha demons only with divine help of the Goddess.
2) The ten incarnations taken by Lord Vishnu were also with the shere support and guidance of Jagan Mata.
Once Lord Vishnu’s head was cut off when a termite created by Brahma bit the string of the bow which Lord Vishnu kept under His hand and it was broken.Then the head was replaced by the head of a Horse and hence He was called Hayagreeva. This act was performed by Lord Brahma.
Among Trimurthies, none of us is great! We are not independent! You also adore Goddess. All the sasges memorized Hayagreeva . He is the pioneer of all the stotras of Goddess.

Once Srihari faught with demons for 10,000 years and was tired. He kept His own bow under His hand and slept.
The body’s weight fell on the string. Srihari was in deep sleep. Brahma and other celestials wanted to perform “ Yaga” for the prosperity of the world. They were all staring at Srihari. They could not afford to wake him up. At the same time they did not want to postpone “Yagam”. To wake His up, Lord Brahma created a termite and asked it to eatthe string of the bow. He expected that there would be some movement in the string for which Srihari wakes up. Termite asks Brahma whether it is genuine to disturb Srihari’s sleep. We should not disturb anybody’s sleep. We should not disturb those who are listening to Bhagavata stories. We should not separate mother & child. This is equal to Gohathya”. Assassination of
Cow.
Brahma said:-
You have to participate in one attempt atleast to wake up Lord Vishnu without whose permission, we cannot start Yaga.
Termite is granted a boon:
1) “Havisu at Homgudam will be yours.” Said Brahma. Much against his wish, it bit the string. It was broken with a huge sound for which mountains moved and earth was totally shaken. Lord Srihars’s head was cut off and had flown into the cosmos. All were awe stricken. They all prayed to Adiparashakti.

Goddess was pleased with their prayers.She addressed the celestials and informed them the reason for this incident.
Hayagreeva was a demon and adored Goddess and asked for a wish that they should not die. Such wish can never be fulfilled. Hence the Goddess denied to grant that boon.Then they requested in some other way that they should die only in the hands of a person having a Horse’s head like him. The Goddess had to accept and she granted the boon. From then onwards, Hayagreeva became highly unruly and wicked, creating disasters. That was the time for the assassination of Hayagreeva and hence the incidence of beheading of Lord Vishnu took place.The Goddess thus instructed all the Celestials and Lord Brahma to get a head of a horse.
This is the mythology of Hayagreeva.
Madhukaitabhas:
Once the whole creation was drowned due to “ Jala Pralaya”.Only Sri Hari was on Sesha Paanpu. The excretion from His ear came out.From that emerged Madhu kaitabha Demons.They did not find land anywhere. They were surrounded by water.They literally grew in that water and became very strong and huge.They were upset as they did not see any other living organism like them and also that they did not have any company.They had a doubt as to who their parents were.They thought of searching for their origin.They decided that there is some energy which created them. There was suddenly a lightning in the sky along with which a sound was also produced sounding like Omkara.They started meditating upon that Omkara for thousands of years.Goddess manifested.Then they realized that the Mantra was that of the Goddess. They asked for a boon that is a boon for “ Death at their will”. They decided to swim in water. They found a lotus flower and Lord Brahma sitting in that in deep meditation.Slowly Brahma opened His eyes and found two devilish faces of Madhu and Kaitabha, which invited Brahma for a fight/war. They demanded for the lotus or asked Him to face the fight with them.Brahma left the lotus and ran away in awe.The demons were running behind Brahma.Brahma prayed Yoga NIdra to wake up Lord Vishnu from sleep.
Srihari got up from sleep. Srihari asked why He left lotus. Brahma said that he was scared of Madhukaitabhas! Madhukkaitabhas found out Brahma and enquired who the handome person is !! Madhukaitabhas and Srihari fought for thousands of years. Yoga Nidra Devi was watching. Srihari said that He was made to fight and that He was in need of rest that too he was weapon less (5000 years). He used his oratory skill. Srihari found out that they had a boon of “Swechcha marana varam”[ a boon of death at their will]. Sri hari, having realized that, prayed to Goddess.

Srihari looked at Goddess. Goddess told him that she would put them in illusion so that Sri Hari could kill him. They looked at the beautiful manifestation of a lady. They stopped war. They were fascinated by Her beauty. Srihari invited them for a fight! Om ask for a boon. Having got fascinated by Goddess, they denied the offer. They offered to give a boon to Srihari & Sri hari asked for a boon that the two demons should die in Srihari’s hands. Madhukaitabhas asked Srihari to kill them in an area where there was no water. They invited Srihari to kill them beating on their thighs.Then they also expanded their thighs emanating fat from their bodies. The fat emerged when they bet on their thighs and the fat emrged when they expanded their thighs formed MEDHINI, formimg into continents with water around them That is how the Earth was formed.We are all the people born on that Medhini formed by the fat of Madhu and Kaitabha. Srihari killed them with Sudharsha. Getting back His lotus’ Brahma prayed Goddess:

We had been discussing about the illusion created by Jagan Mata and how people get diverted from doing bad and guided to perform good activities, with the divine deeds performed by Sri Mata . It depicts Yoga, culture, knowledge and awareness of the essence of Bhakti Tattva. Jaganmata is not available to celestials, or Gods and totally out of reach of demons. Jagadeeswari has a form and at the same time she is formless and is present in the form of a dot. Her energy is neither that of male nor of female. She is visible in all the words in the form of SUMERU. Can we adore the Brahmanda? Can we fill the sea with pot of water? When 5 elements are present in perfect balance,creation takes place. Even if one is imbalanced, the creation gets disturbed. Mata is the one who is compassionate – Gita Mata, Ramayamana Mata, Draupadi Mata are th best examples . The one which gives knowledge is “Mata”. The earth is also addressed as Bhoomata. Bhoomata in the form of sita merged into the earth. The first Guru is the Goddess. The one who teaches is Guru! How to over come Moha & Karma. Today we are going to discuss how Amma had shaken even thrimurthis ! We will discuss Devi Bhagavata Mahima!.

Mythology of Uravasi Pururava:
As Budha fell in love with Ila, a beautiful woman,little did he realize that actually Ila was a King turned into a woman. King Sudyumna, a pious ruler of his subjects went into a forest for hunting but as he and his followers entered the forbidden area, they were all converted as women.This happened due to a ban imposed by Lord Shiva as He was alone with Parvati once,a few sages entered the forest and disturbed the Lord’s privacy. Not aware of this fact, the King and party entered. The king thus converted into a woman,who out of shyness did not return to the kingdom.Per chance, Budha met this woman nd they were married and begot a child, named Pururava. Meanwhile, Sudyumna in woman’s form met Vasistha and revealed the entire happening.Vasistha in turn represented the same to Lord Shiva and Sudyumna was granted a boon that he would be as a woman for a month and as a man for another month by Lord Shiva. When he was in male form, Pururava used to rule the kingdom along with his son. When he was in female form, he used to go into the forest.
Once Narada came to Sudyumna & initiated a divine mantra of Goddess Jaganmata. From then Sudyumna chanted that Mantra of Goddess given by Narada. After some hundred of years Goddess manifested and gave a boon that he would be granted salvation at the lotus feet of the Goddess. In course of time,when Pururava was made the king,Sudyumna retired to Vanprastha and prayed to Devi Bhagavati in the form of woman and her sincere devotion paid off by absorbing her into the eternal Bhagavati herself.
Pururava was ruling the kingdom. Uravasi heard of Pururava. She just went to garden to see the king. Pururava with no such intention entered the garden. He saw her and fell in love with Urvasi. Since the King fell in love with Urvasi,she demanded him to marry her with three conditions.
1) That she would eat food only made of ghee.
2) That she should never see him without clothes.
3) That she brought two celestials but cursed sheep from heaven and that Pururava had to treat them like his own sons and that if they were hurt,she would leave him and go away.
He agreed to all the conditions. Urvasi came on her own just to see pururava. But Pururava fell a prey. If infatuation is initiated, self respect goes away. {This story is told in Rigveda too}
[Attraction stays for a short while. We should not allow our mind to get perverted for which we have to write, read or sleep. But we should never keep our mind empty or get perverted. ] He agreed to all the conditions. Urvasi came on her own just to see pururava. But Pururava fell a prey. If infatuation is initiated, self respect goes away. {This story is told in Rigveda too}
Pururava was a great scholar and a king. He neglected kingdom spending all the time with Urvasi. He performed no homa, yagna or yaga.
Indra suddenly remembered, Urvasi. The four celestial ladies are Indra’s daughters infact.[Rambha,Urvasi,Thilottama and Menaka] He was bothered about his daughter who went to the earth. He sent Gandharvas to bring the sheep which were also cursed Gandharavas. Pururava used to pay maximum attention to the sheep. They stole the cursed Gandharva sheep. Pururava ran out of palace without clothes & was seen by Urvasi. Her conditions were violated.
Sree Mata! Jaganmatha!
Pururava requested Urvasi to stay back with him. But she left. Pururava was disappointed and disgusted. Once Pururava happened to meet Urvasi when he was preached by Urvasi not to behave and lose heart. The life of the one who is infatuated gets wasted. We should not be over ambitious. Scholars do not have any determination. No sankalapa vikalpas. That is why the great people are moving in this world along with ordinary human beings.

After the assassination of Madhu and Kaitabha,trimurties questioned Yoga Nidra Devi[Goddess of yogic sleep] as to what the root cause of the ENERGY was.The whole creation was filled with water. They prayed Mata for guidance to proceed further. Mata ordered them to start creation . Brahma was wondering as to how to start creation since there was no light. no Sun, no Moon and no stars. The trimurtees were all in total darkness. As soon as Brahma used to listened to “Tapa” He always had to meditate. Brahma was about to ask Mata as to how to start creation.In the meanwhile, one chariot arrived. Brahma,Vishnu nd Maheswara sat in that chariot. Then it started flying with speed of mind (Mano vega). It was a big chariot. They could visit any place of their wish. They looked at all beautiful places. They were enjoying. They entered Nandanavanam. They entered Heaven. It would be there forever. Their journey was like window shopping. They could listen to veda and Music. They reached Satya loka, Brahma found another Brahma. He was performing His duty of creation. Vedas & Shastras were being recited there. But the chariot left. They were unable to trace out the route even. “Up and down” are found and felt only in solar family as there is magnetic attraction for Earth. But in the space and cosmos there are no “up and down” It reached Kailasam [ Lord Shiva’s abode] There was another Shiva, performing Shiva Thandava, amidst Vinayaka, Subrahmanya Swamy & Pramatha Ganas.
Within no time they left for another place where they entered Vaikuntha.They found another Vishnu there. Infact Lord Vishnu was laughing at Brahma when they found another Brahma and another Brahma Loka,and laughed at Shiva when they found another Shiva and another Kailasa. Now when they found another Vaikuntha, Vishnu laughed at Himself. They were astonished. They reached one beautiful island in which there was an amazing House called “ Chintamani Griha” Inside that divine house, a beautiful Lady was sitting. Her, glow was equal to crores of suns’ sunlight.
She was holding pasa, Ankusa. A smiling and beautiful Bhuvaneswari Devi was sitting there. Srihari realized and recognized that she was the Matha Goddess. Jagadamba gave a smile. Thrimurthis turned into females. They went to the feet of Bhuvaneswari. They were staring at her feet. They could see the whole cosmos in the toe of Jagadamba. They could see their own reflections in her toe. They prostrated to Jagadamba.

Brahma, Vishnu & Maheswara requested Mata to intiate one Mantra to chant.
Bhajan :
Tripuramba, Trigunamba, Lalithamba Durgamba.
She initiated Navakshara Mantra. The three asked their doubts about their duties. They were just instrumental for creation, sustenance, destruction. Whenever they become egoistic, Jagadamba would get them there to recharge their energy. [ Death is not an easy boon. We should not think of it. We have to meditate upon Amma.] She gave Maha Lakshmi to Vishnu, Maha Saraswathi to Brahma and Maha Kali to Shiva. Lakshmi to be kept in Vishnu’s heart. Saraswathi to be kept in Brahma’s mouth and Mahakali to be kept in glory. She bestowed them with Sattva, Rajas and Thamo Ganas. Bhuvaneswari Devi instructed them to chant “Navakshara Mantra “ if they faced any problem. Jagadeeswari assured them of her manifestation in microscopic form in their hearts to solve their problems. As the Trimurthis came out with wives, they got back their true forms as Celestial Men.
Satyavrata’s story:
There were Rohini & Devadatta in Kosala state. They performed putrakamaesthi yaga to be blessed with children. At the end of Yaga, the veda pundit by name Govind,went wrong in samaveda, that too in uttering a very small musical note. Deva Datta abused Govind for the mistake by calling him a fool. Govind got wild and cursed him that the son who was going to be born to Devadatta would be a fool along with many more curses. Devadatta realized his own mistake of insulting the pundit and apologized. [Good people’s anger is only for a fraction of a second. They should always be blessing the world.] Govind said “ Though your son is a fool, he becomes a scholar later in due course.”
“Utatthyudu” was born to Rohini and Devadatta. He used to be so idle and dumb that he never made an attempt to take up any activity or to speak. The parents were very much depressed. They tried their level best to train him but in vain. Utathyudu realized that his parents were feeling bad for him. He left the house without informing his parents and reached a forest near river Ganges. He used to eat only leaves and vegetables and always sleep. He used to feel very bad for himself.
Once a pig which was hit by an arrow came running to him. He became compassionate for a while. There was a change in his mood, suddenly he said “Aim”. He got amused with his own voice. He liked it very much. That was Beejakshara of Saraswathi.

He kept on praising Goddess Saraswati. For the first time he had a feeling and was able to utter a word that too a divine beejakshara which made him feel good and confident. One Hunter came that side in search of the pig he was hunting and was seen by Utatthvudu. He was trying to kill the pig to be used as food for his family. He wanted to search inside Utadhyudu’s hut. Uthahyudu did not want to lie but at the same time he never wanted the pig to die.

“He said that the eyes which can see cannot speak and the tongue which can speak cannot see!”
Hence go away from here and search for another food item”
That is the power of chanting Beejakshara which does not allow us to speak a lie and also not make any organism fall a prey.
Later he became very popular as Satyavrata, who had taken Truth as his life’s Dharma.
In today’s Mythological story there are two aspects depicting Devi Bhagavata Mahatmyam.
- The way Sudyumna’s devotion paid off by Goddess Jagadamba by absorbing her into the eternal Bhagavati Herself.
- The way Uthathyudu was moulded into a great “ Satyavrata “ with the divine blessings of Goddess Saraswati who initiated the Beejakshara AIM to Uthathyudu who was a dull headed, dumb person.

Till yesterday we had been discussing about the glory of Mata.
What is Hreem?
This is the story of multi faceted Mata. The one who is the mother of the trimurties and taught them a lesson to erase their ego. We are blessed by Sri Marakata Raja Rajeswari. There are so many examples that are brought from various mythologies.
Mata kills Taamasa.
Brahma creates and gives one niyama (rule). That is the specialty of Bhagavata tatva. Devi Bhagavata tatva is being discussed for the first time.
We feel devotion and we develop fear towards Goddess.

In all the puranas (epics) we come across with Nara and Narayana. At the time of creation the role of them (Nara and Narayana) is very important. Till now we had been thinking of Himalaya’s and Badarika Ashramam. But Himalaya is a planet like sphere. Kailasa is not Mt.Kailasa. Then where are Brahma, Vishnu & Maheswara came from. Mata initiated Trimurthies and in the same manner she initiates many in the Universes. If we adore a stone as Mata, finally it becomes real Mata. To give weight and support to his disciple’s (Prahalad) statement that God is everywhere, Vishnu comes out of a pillar. Mata is omni present. There is no defeat for Mata’s disciples. Those who wage a war against devotees will never be left unpunished.
Brahma manasa putra is Dharmudu. Daksha gave his 100daughters in marriage to Dharmudu who was blessed with 4 sons. One of them is Hari & another is Krishnudu. They used to take care of their parents and yagna vatika (the place of sacrifice). Nara and Narayana (3rd & 4th) got vairagya (disinterest towards worldly pleasures). If one keeps on listening to adverse comments one gets used to them and gets vairagya (becomes disinterested towards worldly pleasures). The one who walks towards God and Guru do not care for scolding so that they do not have any attachment to life. Nara & Narayana reached Badarika ashramama for solitarity so that they can meditate peacefully.
Exercise is very important. Exercise to sleep with pleasant mind. Sit for long time and medidate.
Meditation, wealth and yoga are achieved by those who could keep their mind pleasant.
Nara and Narayana went to Badarika Ashrama and observed severe penance by avoiding food and sleep. We easily get disturbed with a small mosquito. We have to control our indriyas (senses). Some bad habits create nuisance to others also. They had meditated upon Goddess Mata for thousands of years. Indra felt that their penance is a threat to his throne.There was a bad omen. The grape juice glass fell from Indra’s hands. He immediately went to Badarika Ashrama and found Nara anal Narayana.
Indra wanted to disturb their penance. He went directly to Nara & Narayana and introduced himself to them that he is the king of all the three worlds and asked them to ask for a boon. He requested them not to continue their penance. Indra was annoyed looking at their silence and indifference. Indra went back to his place but he was very restless. Indra was concentrating and was getting up set about Nara & Narayana like how Ravana always thought of Rama. He looked at Apsarasas. Indra called Manmadha. He requested Manmatha to take Apsarasas and Vasantha [his minister] and go to Nara & Narayana & disturb their penance. Manmatha said that he did not dare to disturb the penance of those who meditate upon Goddess. Indra even though he knew everything asked them to proceed and disturb them. They went and bowed down to Nara & narayana. Manmatha instructed them properly. All the flowers blossomed. Fruites riped. Crows turned to be the cuckoo birds. Beetle bees were making sounds. The apsaras danced. The trees were singing. Nara & Narayayana got disturbed. Rati Manmatha ( Gods of desires)also went and danced there. They realized the intention of Indra. Mahatmas do not get angry so that their Tapo mahima (power of penance) will not be reduced.
All sages praised Nara & Narayana for their Sathva guna (pious nature) and smiling faces of Nara & Narayana. 16,000 beautiful dames were created from one shrug of their body. Each Apsara got one opponent. He tapped on his thigh from where a beautiful lady was created called Urvasi. They hosted all of them with a delicious meal. Apsaras felt bad. They treated Narayana as their father. They felt very happy and declared that they would allow them to stay back in Badarika ashrama. Narayana granted them with a boon by telling them that He take birth in Bhooloka (Earth) in Dwapara Yuga and all the Apsarasas take bith as princesses at the same time. And He instructed them not to disturb the devotees of Amma, the Mother Goddess.
All of them went to Nanadanavanam. That is the power of Devi Upasana Shakti.

Indra was taught a lesson. Indra also started Devi Mansopasana. After some years Daityas and Danavas(demons) went to attack celestials. It was a very long drawn fight for over a year.
Indra lead Devatas’ army and Prahlad lead Danavas’ army. It was a never ending War.
All the living organisms were getting affected. Peace is very important.

Indra & Prahlada simultaneously meditated upon Goddess. Prahlada was not very willing to have a fight since Prahlada is a great devotee. Prahlda pleaded Goddess Mata for help.
She said!
Oh Devas & Danavas!
Give up Mada, Mastrayas (Arrogance and jealous). You are all brothers and lead a life of dharma. If they started war again she said that she would punish them. From then onwards there was no war. In Krita yuga she gave them all peace. In Treta yuga, Demons & celestials care of earth. Devi lalita (Pandava), asuritatva (Kaurava) came to earth in Dwapara Yuga .
Kaliyuga both the qualities are present is the same person. That is why they should come to Guru at a small their early age to be bestowed with Daiva balam (power and protection of God).

Worship Mata to destroy the nature of the demon and to increase pious nature.
Mahishasuramardhinni:
Dhanuvu was blessed with two sons called Rambudu and karambudu.
They had observed penance for 1000 years on Agni deva.
In Krita yuga life leaves the body only when bones get destroyed.
In Treta Yuga life leaves the body when the Muscles get destroyed.
In Dwapara Yuga life leaves the body when the Skin gets destroyed but in Kali Yuga Life leaves the body when Upiri( Breath) gets stopped. So breath is to be protected in Kali Yuga.
In happiness hamsa (inhale and exhale) will not go waste. In anger & depression hamsa will get wasted. There should be no jealousy. Indra was scared of Penance. Indra took the form of crocodile and killed Rambudu in the water. Karambudu performed yaga and was about to sacrifice his head to Agni deva. Agni stopped him and asked him to ask for a boon. Karambudu asked for a son, handsome, powerful and who can win celestials. Agni granted him the boon and said that from that time onwards whom ever he looks upon will be his wife and he will be blessed with a son with that person or creature only. Have concentration. Don’t get distracted with attractions.
On the way he saw a yaksha couple spending time happily. One buffalo was also there enjoying by looking at the couple. Rambhudu fell in love with buffalo which in turn liked Karambudu and became pregnant. He took it to his place. The buffalo was protected by he-buffalos. The maids decorated the queen buffalo. On demon fell in live with buffalo and joind her protectors in disguise and was waiting for proper time. Rambudu came to know and had beaten the demon to death. All other he-buffelows fought him (Rambudu) and killed Rambudu. The one which died got back its life. The pregnant buffalo tried to run away. Yakshulu took care of the queen buffalo and had driven away the pursuiers. Rambudu’s body was burnt in front of the queen buffalo which also whad fallen into the fire and died. Suddenly the flame went up to sky. There was shower of commets from the sky. The flames had faded away. The one who emerged from the fire was “Mahishasura”. He destroyed homa gunda, troubled pundits. Celestials were scared. Mahisha sent Chikshusa and Tamra to fight with the celestials. Both of them died. Mahishursura went to war field. His form was every where. Celestials could not identify who the real Mahisha was! Mahisha used Shambhavi Vidya to keep all in illusion Andharudu performed wrestling with Shiva. He ate away Shiva’s trident and also the disc of Vishnu. Mahisha, coming back to his true form, pierced his trident into Vishnu’s Vakshasthala (chest).Looking at Mahisha’s cruel deed, Shiva disappeared. Mahisha with roaring sounds attacked all the celestials and when they all ran away, Mahisha became uncontrollable and ate away the weapons left by Indra.
All the celestials reached Vaikuntha. They discussed about the boon granted to Mahisha by Agni deva and decided that He would be killed only in the hands of a woman. Hence they submitted all their powers each celestial/God contributing for one organ to get a form of Divine Mata. That was how Jaganmata manifested. They submitted all their weapons to Jaganamata.

Parashakti gave a smile looking at all the celestials. She started laughing which had turned into a ferocious laugh. She mounted a fiery lion and roared. It was a roar that shook mountains and created huge waves in the seas. Even Mahisha was worried for a second, but his vanity took over when he saw that the terrible form was that of a woman. Durga created a large army from her breath to fight Mahisha’s army and then fought with Mahisha who came in the form of a buffalo. Jagan Mata declared sitting in her beautiful garden, with all 18 forms of energies that she was Parashakti,Jagajjananai, the creator and a Sadguru Rupini for all the universes. This manifestation and declaration about herself is unique of the Universal Goddess. He took the form of Sarabha to attack Jaganmata but She cut all his eight legs. As he struggled to set himself from the buffalo form she killed him with her sword and the disc with hundred edges, releasing the earth and heavens of the burden called Mahishasura.
All the celestials adored Jaganmata.

Purana is endless. Sea is endless. Similarly, Devi mahatmyam is unending. We have witnessed how Mata liberated the soul of Mahishasura.
Today we will discuss the story of Shumbha and Nishumbha.
How she taught everyone a lesson. How she established dharma. What change in us will help us erase tamo guna. Mata taught us. The story is created in such a way that we get questions and answers too. How people of satva guna are protected is discussed in this story

Mama Hridaye lasa lalithe
After killing Mahisha, other demons ran away to Patala. Some remnants of tamo guna was there. The vessel in which a dish is cooked is identified by us however clean it was. People were thinking that kingdom was peaceful and prosperous.
There arrived some demons (daitya danava rakshas). The Rakshasa number was increasing. They were very cruel and were troubling others. Sumbha and Nishumbha wanted to commit a very big cruel deed. They wanted to acquire more power than celestials. They decided to start penance on earth in pushkara. Those who meditate should not sit on floor. What if sit on wood, in water, in fire, in the sea, everywhere standing. The fruits of sitting in different ways is different.. They did penance for thousands of years. Brahma is “kshipra prasadi”. Shiva too is the same. They asked Brahma to make them immortal.
Brahma:
“You are asking for a boon that is against nature. I am a grand father. I myself am not immortal. Every living organism has to die. The one who is behind creation and behind those. He himself is immortal just namesake. But I too have an account. Let death be there. Don’t insist on that. Ask for other boons. Shumbha and Nishumbha thought for a while. Then they came up with a big list of conditions just like Hiranyakashyapa Hiranyakashyapa gave a big list. Brahma granted all his wishes. So when the time had come to kill Hiranyakashyapa, Vishnu looked at his list of wishes.
Not day not night then evening. So Vishnu chose twilight.
Neither on earth nor in water nor in the sky. Vishnu chose his thighs
Should not die of any weapons – nakhas, nails
Life must go neither through limbs nor through head-then intestines
He should not be a man or an animal. Narasimha is half man and half animal
Shumbha and Nishumbha:
“We should not die because of animals, celestials and Gods”
Except women, we should not die due to any organism. They demanded that everybody should adore them. They went to Bhooloka.
Their companions were Chanda Munda, Dhumralochana, Raktabeeja. Raktabeeja has a special boon that every blood drop from his body produces millions of his clones. Peoples and celestials fleed from the place they were hiding themselves in caves and forests eating leaves and roots.
All the celestials gathered near Himavat parvatam and decided to pray to Goddess.

Mata takes bath in all the rivers. She manifested as Viswamohini to celestials while going to take bath in river ganges. She looked at the celestials and enquired.
They narrated their troubles caused by Shumbha and Nishumbha, Raktabeeja and Dhumralochana. The Goddess roared.
“Kaushiki”
A beautiful lady similar to Goddess emerged who was named “Jagadamibika”. Suddenly Parvati’s body became dark and was called Kalidevi.
Goddess making Kalidevi sit in front of her and started to sing. The seven swaras (notes) came down to Goddess from different golas (spheres). Everybody was attracted by the metallic voice. The sound was so melodious which came in the form of waves. Chanda mundaasuras also listened to the beautiful voice. They were attracted to her beauty. She is the one who is seen in Silver Mountain and Golden Mountain and seen in the sun rays.
They looked at Ambika devi. Shumbha fell in love with Ambika devi. Ambika devi said that she was also was also waiting in the garden to get married. However, she had a condition that she would get married only to the one who defeated her. Shumbha and Nishumbha agreed to the condition. Dhumralochana was sent to bring Ambika. Ambika made humkara. Dhumralochana burned to ashes. Shumbha and Nishumbha came to fight. Ambika became wild. She said that she brought two animals for sacrifice to Ambika.

Chanda and Munda were assassinated. Raktabeeja was asked to go and fight with Goddess. Ambika Kalimata was roaring for which the chariot of Raktabeeja (1000 donkeys were pulling his chariot) was stuck. When she tried to kill Raktabeeja, from every drop of blood, millions of Raktabeejas were emerging.
Kalika spread her tongue to all the sides so that not even a single drop of blood of Raktbeeja fell on the earth. The whole tongue was filled by many Raktabeejas. Ambika used on lakh arrows. Ambika slayed Raktabeejasura. The celestials rejoiced at his death.
Here Shiva went as an ambassador to Shumbha and Nishumbha requesting them to seek an apology. Shumbha and Nishumbha refused to listen to Shiva and got ready to wage a war against the Goddess.
Nishumbha stood in front her but Ambika changed into a very cruel, stout, dark form. He got scared. He was sure of facing death. Hey! My son! Go! Run away to Patala. I don’t want to kill you.
She cut his head and swallowed it and with 16 arrows she cut his body into small pieces. The celestials prayed to Mother Goddess. Shumbha felt bad and cried. Before he got Satvika guna, he decided that he had to fight with her even if he were going to die!
Shumbha says, “I don’t feel like killing you oh Ambika!” Then, Ambika challenged Shumbha to fight with her fierce Kali Durgi form. Kali Durgi grew to such a great height that she was touching the sky. All the worlds trembled. He threw the mace onto her. She dodged it. She cut his left hand (every action here has a mantra). She cut his right hand. He wanted to jump and beat her with his legs which she cut them too. Finally, with an iron mace, Mother Goddess put an end to demon Shumbha.
The celestials requested her to calm down. As kalika mata smiled, she became calm and merged into Ambika.

When we perform good deeds time moves very first. Scholars never waste time. They never say that they fall short of time. Lazy people want to prolong their life. Scholars never think of time. They never count nor reveal even while leaving the body. Mind does not require leisure. One should remember what one listens from Guru. Butter is extracted by churning. One should not have doubts in listening to Pravachana once and again.
Goddess is omni present. We should be compassionate to all the living organisms.

The one who adores nature literally adores Goddess. From a distance if we watch a mountain, stars, clouds, birds and trees with drops of rain, we can enjoy the beauty of Nature. Watch the way birds fly in rows, the sounds produced by taps, the sounds of waves in river.All these aspects of Nature have to be adored.
Sudhara when he lost his kingdom, Goddess gave him back his kingdom.Samadhi another devotee when he never wanted kingdom, she gave him spiritual elevation. Ekaveera was born with Lakshhmi Narayana Amsa. Evali was very beautiful. Kalaketa,a demon carries her to paatala and forces to marry . Ekaveera went to patala, destroyed Kalaketha and married Evali purely with the divine blessings of Mother Goddess.
Kartveeryudu: But for the compassion of Goddess, it is difficult to be peaceful. They can neither swim their samsara nor come out of it. Narada also was once drowned in samsara.
Nara – knowledge, da the distributor. Once when Narada went to vaiakunta, Narayana was spending time in a happy mood with Lakshmi. As Narada entered,Sri Lakshmi went inside. Narayana was laughing along with Lakshmi. In a jovial mood. “Why are you old people behaving like this?” Narada could not relish the romantic mood of Lakshmi and Narayana. Then Narayana wanted to teach Narada a lesson by showing the taste of Samsara. “Oh man! Let us go out” said Narayana. He had flown on Garuda along with Narada. Narada found a beautiful lake. He liked it very much. Garuda landed there. Narada left all his instruments and jewels with Narayana, went to lake and took one dip. He had taken second dip. He started playing and had taken a dip for the third time. Every time he used to come out of the river, he used to confirm Narayana’s presence there. Third time when he got up, he became a female. He looked for Srihari who was not there. Garuda was not there. His veena, his jewels his kamandala, everying was lost. He lost his voice too.
Thaladhawaja, a king came, on a horse. He fell in love with the lady like Narada. The king asked “who are you?’ “ I do not know who my parents are! I do not remember anything’said Narada. After three dips in the lake my form is changed. Narada was feeling shy. She was crying. The king married her. Narada and had 12 children. He was totally drowned in world of illusion. Narada forgot all his knowledge. In the meanwhile, Thaladhwaja was attacked by enemies.He died and she lost all her 12 sons in the war. She went to the war area and cried identifying all the dead bodies of her children and husband. One Brahmin went there. She was advised not to cry and not to waste time. He advised her to perform all the rituals and advised to take bath in the lake. She Narada went and took a dip. Narada got back his original form and became ‘Narada.” He found Garuda and Narayana along with kamandala and Mahati, his veena. In that little time Narayana gave him a big experience. Narayana taught him a lesson for mistaking the jovial mood of Lakshmi & Narayana. He said it is not that easy to be balanced in life but for the compassion of Goddess.

Mata’s tests are of variety but they face all the tests.
King Charyati had a daughter Sukanya. King used to take his daughter along with her friends for hunting. Sukanya looked at an ant hill. They wandered in to the forest.That hill was in the shape as though a person is seated .She watched ant’s movements. She poked with a stick (children play with cockroach, frogs by tying thread, which is very annoying habit) as there was some movemet inside to test whether a worm comes out. From the ant hill blood started oozing. Chyavana Maharshi was meditating inside the ant hill and when sukanya poked it hit his body and he lost his eyes.
He did not curse Sukanya. Charyati and all his relatives had a disturbed stomach/digestive system and all of them fell down. Then the king enquired and he came to know about the deed done by his daughter. The king went to the sage apologizing for his daughter’s deed. But the sage demanded to give Sukanya’s hand in marriage to him as he was blinded by her. Sukanya married sage Chyavana and served him praying to Mother Goddess.
One day while returning from the lake she was stopped by Aswini devatas (celestials) and they requested her to marry them as they remain young always unlike Chyavana. She warned them to curse. In the fear of cursing by the sage they had offered her to cure her husband of his blindness and his old age. They had taken her husband to the lake and three of them took a dip in the lake together and when they emerged from the lake they three looked alike. They said that if she could recognize her real husband, they leave her and go. She prayed to Jaganmata to give her the power to identify her husband. Mother gave an indication in the form of a bee and Sukanya identified her husband. Chyavana in return of their help persuaded Indra to give a portion of “Somapana”from the sacrifices to Aswini celestials.

Once a demon called Durgamasura, planned to steal Vedas as they are the source of knowledge. He prayed Lord Brahma in penance and the lord gave the Vedas to him. All the sages forgot Vedas. There were no Yagnas no homa, no rains and severe famine prevailed during that period. He was very happy with all the atrocities. Lord Brahma prayed to Mother goddess and she manifested as Kadambari. She wore all types of vegetables in her hands and she was full of eyes (Shatalochani).
She fought with Durgamasura for 9 days. Heavenly crops were up. All the celestials are happy. Different forms like Kalika, Bhairavi,Bhagala Ramaa, Tripurasundari,Tulja and Mohini emerged from her and they fought with Durgamasura and destroyed him. She is the destroyer of Durgati( worst situations) so She is Durga!

Jaganmata is all pervading. She manifested in several places for the convenience of devotees which are called “Shakti peethas”.108 places are there among which 18 are very important.

Who ever prays this way, will be bestowed with the result equal to that of visiting all the shakti peethas.
All the celestials looked at the great manifestation of “ Shakambari”They could identify their original forms and their places in the Universe.They requested Shakambari to get back to her original form as they were all awe stricken with that amazing manifestation.

We find two examples in our puranas:
1) Akshaya patra provided to Draupadi by Sri Krishna which gave food for unlimited people.
2) Rama’s pushapaka vimanam which accommodated unlimited people.
No words to express our astonishment. Bhagavata Purana is such Akshaya Patra. Bhagavata is like Pushpaka Vimana. We can find the depth of a sea but not that of Bhagavata.
Today we pray the Lord Sun who gives us health. All the Celestials along with Indra meditate upon the Sun’s rays. We also meditate upon the Sun (the visible Sun is the one among the millions of spheres of the Surya Deva in the Surya loka). We meditate upon the Suryadeva.

Mata wears a crown and sparkles with the beauty of the moon light.
Once when King Pandu asked for thithi, Muka kavi who was immersed in the meditation ,casually said it was a full moon day though it was the 8th lunar day). King got wild and went to ask why he gave him the wrong information. Before he gave any answer Mata released radiant light from her nose ring. It looked like a full moon day. That poet who was dumb. Yet he could speak and give a statement that it was Full Moon day and Mata made his statement to be true. Such is Her Grace towards Her devotees. Even though ‘Muka Kavi’ gave a faulty reply as he was busy with Navavarana puja, Mata helped her disciple and saved him. That is the divine power [mahatmyam] of Mata.
[One should not ask anything when the Navavarana puja is in progress. One may not get a proper answer.]
The forehead of Jagadamba is like a crescent Moon and Her hair is also like a crescent Moon and they both together reflect like a Full Moon.
Jagadamba blesses all the villages, towns, cities, countries and the Universal family and protects !

There are 5 avataras of Prakriti Mata.
1) Durga – killed Durgamudu, helped in Kamsavadha in Krishnavatara, She is Shiva Priya, Ganesha Mata, Mangala, chadika, kalika
2) Mahalakshmi:- Vishnu priya, Vaikuntha Vaasini, Swarga vasini, Gruha Lakshmi, Vaani jayalakshmi
3) Maha Saraswathi:- Sangeetha Saraswati, Brahma priya – Nitya, Sri vidya
4) Savitri – Gayathri, Sanaathe, Tapasvini
5) Radhadevi:- Raseshi, Raaseswari, Krishna Prana Vallabha, Krishna Priya
Mata is present in every organism in female form as kalaarupam (the form of art), kaala rupam (ferocious form) or Amsa rupam (part of the divine portion).As Mata is present in every female, distressing women is equals to distressing Jaganmata. Honoring women is our tradition.
Seetha, Chaaya, Draupadi are Amsa rupas (part of the divine portion) of Mata Parashakthi.
Agni Deva approached Rama way before the incident of the abduction of Sita and said that He will protect Sita in his abode and return her back after Ravanasura was killed. Agnideva replaced Sita by Chaya Sita (Shadow of Sita) and took Sita Mata to protect at his place.
Ravanasura abducted Chaya Sita. Chaya always talked to Ravanasura holding a grass in the middle of them suggesting that he’ll be burnt to ashes if he proceeded towards her. Ravanasura also knew that he would meet his end by committing a non ethical deed. But he preferred this non ethical path to reach the Vaikuntha earlier. Lakshmana,being unaware of this divine plan drew Lakshmana rekha to protect Sita before going in pursuit of Rama.
After Ravanasura was killed and original Sita is returned to Rama and Chaya Sita asked what is destined to her. Indra asked her to go to Pushkara Kshetra and observe penance there. In Dwapara Yuga she was to be born from the Yagna Kunda of king Drupada as his daughter Draupadi. Mahabharata War was to take place because of her. Dustha Chathusthaya (embodiment of evil force) were to be eradicated.
Pativrathalu (pious ladies of our puranas) struggled a lot. They are real mothers and projected tolerance to the world. Those who meditate upon the Panchakanyalu get rid of their sorrows.
“Ahalaya, Draupadi, Seetha, Tara, Mandodhari thadha panchakanya smarennityam maha paathaka naasanam “

The story of Tulasimata wipes out all the sins committed mentally.
The name Tulasi is unparallel and very powerful. She meditated upon Brahma to get Vishnu as her husband. Shankhachodudu, a cursed person was living in patala. In that birth she was to marry him to get rid of her karmas. In her next birth she could marry Sri Hari! She obliged and married him and served him with devotion.
Once a guru gave his disciples some fruits and asked them to eat without being observed by anyone. All of them ate inside closed doors or covering themselves with a bed sheet. But Purandhara came back without eating them. When asked he said that there are 5 elements every where and hence he could not hide anywhere and eat. His Guru blessed him saying that he would be blessed with the manifestation of Vittala!

Shiva granted boons to Shankachuda. He became very powerful. Shiva’s boon made him proud and he waged war on Vaikunta. Srihari & Shanka Chodudu had a big fight. To protect her husband Tulasi Mata was in deep meditation. Sri Hari’s Sudarshana disc also proved to be powerless before him as the power of Tulasimata’s meditation was his shield.
Sri Hari wanted to disturb her meditation and went to her in the disguise of her husband. Tulasi gave up deeksha thinking that her husband had come back,to serve her husband. Just for looking at maya Shanka chodudu (para purusha ) her penance got disturbed. Shankha chuda’s shield was broken. Srihari manifested in his original form and said that for the welfare of the Universe Shankhachuda’s death is inevitable. He asked her to sacrifice herself in Yogaagni and to take rebirth in Goloka as Radha. He granted her a boon that she would become a pious plant Tulasi, with medicinal values and be adored by people. Tulasi is the favourite plant of lord Vishnu and also lord Shiva. Her mortal body turns into river Gandaki having Salagramas in it. Shankhachuda got liberated.

Those who perform Tulasi puja every day will be granted the result of performing lakhs of Aswamedha yagas.

Those who would be given Tulasi theertha during their death time get rid of all their sin and reach Vaikuntha. Eat one leaf at least a day for maintaining good health. Those who wear Tulasi get the blessing of performing one Lakh Ashwamedha yagalu. Tulasi body turned into river Gandaki and crores of Vishnu amsas turn to Salagramas (pious stone like organism used in worship as the form of lord Vishnu) are found in the river. In that river Srihari is present during early in the morning. It is Klapa Vriksha.
