Discourse of HH Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji during Pushya Navaratri – January 11, 2012 – Vijayawada

Pujya Sri Swamiji is blessing us with His discourse of Devi Bhagavatham for the past three days. It is important to recapitulate the knowledge that is heard and ponder over it. Only then you will get its merit. What is Bhagavatham?  We have two Bhagavathams. One is Devi Bhagavatham which describes about mother Goddess and the other is Srimad Bhagavatham which talks about Lord Krishna. Vyasa maharshi  after completing Bhagavatham, was to decide a name for it. When we say sahasranama (1000 names) we ask which sahasranama ? Is it Lalitha sahasranama or Vishnu sahasranama. Like wise, when Vyasa said it is Bhagavatham, all other sages asked which Bhagavatham. Then Vyasa named the Devi story as Devi Bhagavatham and Krishna story as Srimad Bhagavatham.

Devi Bhagavatham is a vast subject. Pujya Swamiji is blessing all of us with this knowledge under the mask of Pushya Navratri. It is our utmost fortune that we are listening this through Pujya Swamiji directly. It is said that Soota Maha Muni preached this Devi Bhagavatham in Naimisharanyam (It is an Indian forest which finds its mention in several Puranas) Naimisharanyam is also considered as Vedaranyam. In such Vedaranyam, we are listening to Devi Bhagavatham from Lord Datta Himself who is in the form of Pujya Sri Swamiji. The procedure of worshipping mother Goddess, the system of Navaavarana is explained in Sri Vidya. Sri Vidya is the ultimate and highest knowledge of mother goddess originated from Dattatreya as Tripura Rahasyam.

sachchidananda roopinyai samsaaraaranaye namaha

pancha krutya vidhatretey bhuvanesyai namo namaha

This was the mantra given by Appaji in yesterday’s discourse. It just sounds as a 32 lettered slokam but it has the power to suffuse all 14 lokas (worlds). This is the main mantra amongst the Gayatri mantras in Devi Bhagavatham. This mantram says Samsara arani. Arani is used to kindle fire by means of attrition. We can complete things only when we have heat in us. Mother Goddess is called as Arani… the one who generates that heat inside us.  Why we should listen to these stories ? How many ever times we listen to them, still there will be some hidden secrets in those stories. Ramayana is written by so many writers. Vishwanatha Sathyanarayana is one among them who hails from this place Vijayawada. Someone asked him, why are you writing it again ? He said, we had meal yesterday, why are we eating again today ? The more you listen to Devi Bhagavatham, the more new information comes out of it.

Why should we listen ? What is the result of this ? It is our dharma. It is our duty. Like how we learn about our family, our parents, our place, likewise, we should also know about our origin and the formation of the creation. We should also know about the Parabrahma – the creator through whom this entire universe which has many unveiled secrets in it has been evolved. Else, we will not have any destination in life. We do not know what to achieve in life. That is the very reason that mother goddess is called Panchakrutya (the one who is engaged in the five fold activity of creation) She is Adi Parashakti of this creation. We should know about Her. She is called as Saantyatheetha Kalatmika. When we hear this mantra, we feel she is without shanti (peace), but that is wrong. She is like a crystal.

In the last three days, Swamiji explained about 3 different episodes. Now lets go through the summary of this.

When we look at it, first is Urvasi, Pururava story. We often make fun of Apsaras that they are being sent by Indra to destroy the penance of rishis. The one who says Idi Idi Idi (this this this) is Indra. That means all those who are in constant search are Indras. He sent Urvasi. We all thought Urvasi is Indra’s lover. She is Indra’s daughter – says Swamiji. The parjanya devathas – the clouds, thunder, lightening, the current generated out of these all these are Indra Putrikas (daughters) without which there are no rains, no earth. Urvasi is sent to stabilize the mind.

Next is Moham – Delusion. We cannot continue to do Sadhana with delusory attachment. We must come out of it. We should be able to differentiate between what is for us and what is not for us. Student should only study. Employees should only work. Farmer should concentrate on his crop. Urvasi is sent to remove this delusion. It is just not for students that they should concentrate but for everyone, Swamiji has given a message through the story of Pururava. Mother Goddess removes moham.

Confidence is good. Self confidence also good but over confidence is not good. Second story of Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva being taken in a aircraft by mother goddess to different worlds where they found another Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva replacing them, explains this concept. Na aham Karta… I’m not doing is what they realised. This story explains us that we should not be over confident.

Every one says that we should win over moham, anger etc etc. But how to do it is also to be explained. Satyavratha story told by Swamiji yesterday explains this. Those who surrender themselves at Sadguru’s feet will definetely win. There is a story in Samaveda. Sethu means bridge. Satyavratha story says, cross the ocean of anger and illusion by the bridge of truth. Truth should  be our faith & dharma is the wonderful message given by Pujya Swamiji.

I offer prayers at the Holy Feet of Pujya Sri Swamiji on all your behalf and seek His blessings to attain the state explained above.
