Speech of HH Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji – Maha Shivaratri before dawn – February 18, 2015 – Mysore
Jaya Guru Datta
“Om Namassivaya Appaji”, my parrots say.
Om Namo Hanumate Namaha
Jai veera Hanuman ki jai
Om Namo Hanumate Namaha
Why do we praise Hanuman today by chanting Hanuman Chalisa, instead of chanting Namassivaya? It is wrong to question like that. Siva and Hanuman are one and the same. There is no difference between them. Remembering Hanuman is the same as remembering Lord Siva.
Let us try to understand how Hanuman is of the same essence as Lord Siva.
Why are they the same? We will make a daring effort to learn.
27 times we chanted Hanuman Chalisa in Tenali. For over two hundred thousand people to chant like that in one voice is not humanly possible. Only Hanuman can do something like that. After that day Swamiji decided to do 130 crore repetitions of Hanuman Chalisa. Hanuman will be pleased if we remember him and praise him. All the gods will be pleased if Hanuman is praised. To please Siva, pleasing Hanuman is the means. Why is Hanuman of Siva’s aspect?
Before proceeding to study that subject, it is best that we first meditate on, and praise Lord Siva.
Bhajan. Om Namassivaya neelakandharaaya .. (extraordinary and difficult rhythm)
(I offer prayers to Lord Siva. His throat is blue. He is adorned with snakes. He is the Lord of Dance. He is a great Mantra. He has a great voice. His feet are soft. He grants self-restraint in mind and body. He wields a trident. He bestows happiness. He is praised by Brahma and the Vedas. He rides the bull. He is happy with instrumental music. He destroys the fear of death. He is the manifestation of discipline and all rules and restrictions. He is the Supreme Lord. He is the essence of all Yajnas. He is even-minded. He goes everywhere. He is Sat-Chit-Ananda and is ever accompanied by His consort Amba)
Siva loves music and rhythm. Siva Thandavam is not at all the way it is depicted in dance programs, in either Bharata Natyam or Kuchipudi. The artists can only try to imagine how it might have been. Siva’s feet do not rest on the earth, but float in the air leaping from mountain to mountain. The sound alone is heard. In healing, Swamiji uses Ramesh’s mridangam, where the drummer concentrates and follows Swamiji’s intricate and difficult rhythms. He cannot afford to look this way or that. It is very tough. But he enjoys and manages to maintain the pace. It is a complicated mixture of various beats. Rhythms that are not easy for everyone to follow and sing along, Swamiji manages to render effortlessly. Nandi and Bhringi struggle to keep up with Lord Siva’s dance rhythms. They keep falling down.
I play a tune. How to sing it? The notes keeps jumping seemingly erratically up and down. Now the second part of the song continues with a different combination of notes and beats. These are not some random notes and beats. Swamiji plays and sings as He offers worship to the deities of the particular melodies and rhythms. The deity of the melody dances. That is why people come running to the music concerts. Many combinations of 1600 instruments are heard in the specially designed keyboard. Today only one instrument is heard.
The same raga will be presented in strange and unique ways. That is why the different ragas work on nerves for healing. The way Swamiji projects the different ragas is unique. This is not musical technique. Keyboard is convenient and so Swamiji uses it. The same raga/musical scale is presented in multi-varied patterns. So many different CDs have been produced. Ten minutes after the first rendering is made, if Swamiji plays the same raga a second time, it will sound very different and will follow a totally different pace and rhythm. People forget themselves in happiness while listening to it. Swamiji knows how many times each note has to be repeated and what notes should be combined. The same music may be played on different instruments, but will sound very different.
Siva loves music and dance.
In the Hanuman Chalisa there is a line .. Sankara Suvana Kesari Nandana…This line proves that Siva is none other than Hanuman. Born of Siva’s essence, Hanuman became the beloved son of Kesari. Suvana means son. How can Hanuman be the son of both Siva and Kesari? The doubt naturally arises in the mind.
Deities are not born from the womb. Only by a glance and an idea they emerge. It is typical of deities. It does not happen like that with humans. It will become chaos if it did. We must not compare ourselves with gods.
How can a mosquito compare itself with an elephant? We are like insects in comparison. A mosquito also boasts of a trunk like an elephant’s. It pokes it into our skin and sucks our blood. It boasts that it can even enter into an elephant’s ear. It challenges that an elephant cannot fly the way a mosquito flies. People also have a tendency to think that they are gods and try to act like gods. But people cannot be gods. They are only born as human beings.
Many Puranas affirm that Hanuman is the son of Siva. We may wonder about it. The radiance of all the gods is gathered in Hanuman. His is a special incarnation. He is eventually the same as Siva.
All the celestials prayed to Brahma to relieve them of the torments caused by Ravana. Ravana had Brahma’s boons which made him very powerful. Brahma took all the celestials to Vishnu and they all offered their combined prayers to Vishnu to save them. Vishnu heard their prayers. He took all their energy from them and made a small ball out of it and had Siva swallow it. Siva just swallowed it without a second thought. He never stopped to examine what the ball consisted of.
Just now we witnessed in the dance ballet how Siva came running to drink the milk offered by the young girl Kodagusu of Koluru who had absolute faith in Him. Siva is such a simpleton who easily believes everyone and grants His grace. He even drank venom unhesitatingly to save the worlds.
Vishnu gave the gods the boon that He would incarnate as a human being on earth as the son of Dasaratha to kill the demon Ravana. Siva would be born with the energies of all the gods combined. All the gods who had contributed their energies to this deity now had to be born ahead of him on earth as Vanaras to serve him in his mission to help Rama, who would kill Ravana. Vishnu announced that with help only from monkeys he would kill Ravana.
When Siva swallowed the ball of Energy and began dancing with Parvati with Yoga Kriya, that radiance from Siva became unbearable for Parvati to endure. How can one keep silk clothing on while amidst fire? How could she continue her dance with Siva? While Siva and Parvati danced thus, the virility was unbearable for Parvati when it was transferred into her by Siva. It came from fire. Unable to endure it, she gave the radiance to Agni. He could not bear it also. It was so powerful that it was ready to even burn Fire itself. Badabagni is the Fire that can even burn Fire. Fire sometimes stops fire. But not always. It will thereafter begin to destroy all other things unless proper precautions are taken.
Agni, unable to bear the heat, gave it away to Vayu/Air, who was traveling everywhere. Nothing normally sticks to air. Even science acknowledges that. But this radiance got stuck to air and began consuming it. He could not bear this heat. He was frantic to get rid of it.
On Venkatadri, right at this time, Kesari’s wife Anjana Devi was doing penance for obtaining a child, addressing Lord Siva. She was eligible to receive this burning radiance as a result of her powerful penance conducted over many years. Vayu gave her this radiance as if it were a fruit to be eaten. Anjana ate it. Now Lord Hanuman entered the womb of Anjana. Anjaneya was born. He had the power of all the gods, especially of Lord Siva.
This explanation completely justifies the line:
Sankara Suvana Kesari Nandana …
Bhajan. Anjanamma tapasuchesi ninu phalamuga pondenu
(Mother Anjana obtained you as the fruit of her penance. O Hanuman, your name is the suitable mantra for the entire world. When I offer you a complete coconut fruit, all my efforts will be fruitful. While living on earth, even in a dream, I will not forget to chant your name. Make my mind free from all irritation. Make my mind pure. Destroy the lust that troubles my mind, O Brahma of the future. Unable to tolerate the sufferings of Kali Yuga, we cling to your feet, O Lord. Please give us the sweet instruction which will rescue us from our plight. Please make my heart the temple for you to reside in. O Lord Hanuman in the Marakata green precious stone, you are the form of Sachchidananda)
Lord Hanuman’s story appears in the Satarudreeya episode mentioned in the Siva Purana. Siva’s one hundred incarnations are described and they are connected with Lord Hanuman also. Nandeeswara narrated these stories to Sanatkumara.
Siva once felt surprised and infatuated with the Mohini form assumed by Lord Vishnu. Maha Vishnu’s female form cannot possibly be described or presented or conceptualized in any manner. It is something unique and extraordinary. No painter can depict such beauty in any medium. It is unimaginable. Vishnu Himself is unimaginably enchanting. It is therefore impossible to even conceptualize the beauty of Vishnu when He assumes a female form.
Siva perhaps wished to send Parvati away on a holiday, so that He could switch wives and spend time with Mohini instead. Of course, this is an exaggeration. We may then justify our monkey minds which begin to waver and get tempted thus. But that is wrong thinking. If your thinking goes along such lines, you are certain to suffer a downfall. We cannot imitate the gods. If you do everything that Siva does, then you may think of following His example.
Siva swallowed fire. We cannot do that. We have no capacity to do what He does.
Siva’s mind was momentarily distracted and He wanted to accost Mohini and speak with her. He wondered why His mind became unsteady. At once Siva realized the secret behind this Mohini form and its strong influence upon His mind. He therefore controlled Himself. This was the time when Anjana was praying to Him for a child. This disturbance in His mind had to occur for something significant to take place for the welfare of the world. He remembered Vishnu’s vow to incarnate as Rama with a mission to establish Dharma, and His own promise to be born on earth to help Him.
Siva now decided to give away His infatuated mind to someone else. He took it out and left in a forest. Is it possible for us to do something like that? We cannot even draw a drop of blood out of our bodies.
The seven rishis and all the gods saw this action. The five elements saw this. No one can ever escape the five elements which witness everything always. We hide under a blanket and eat bananas and peanuts like rats, thinking that no one can see us. We like to eat in stealth to get proper satisfaction.
One must be afraid of Dharma. One is always watched by the five elements. The seven great rishis came there and saw that Siva had left His energy of desire for a woman on a leaf. The rishis picked it up and gave it to Anjana to consume. Vayu also gave her the radiance of Siva at this same time. All the radiance of Siva thus collected inside Anjana. Anjana was not an ordinary female. She was a great yogini. Siva was born to her in a Vanara form as Hanuman.
Hanuman was a naughty child. He saw the rising sun which appeared to him like a fruit. We also feel like reaching for it if we see the rising or the setting sun. We feel like taking photographs. We feel like flying up in an aircraft to reach the sun. The sun begins to look like the moon.
Hanuman flew up wishing to eat the sun. The gods prayed to Hanuman to leave the sun alone. There are stories that describe how Hanuman got hit by the Vajrayudha, the weapon of Indra, and how his jaw became crooked because of the wound.
Hanuman got hit. He left the fruit/sun. He then swooned. His jaw became swollen. All the celestials showered various boons upon him. Hanuman told his mother all that happened.
Anjana ordered Hanuman to go seek refuge with the sun, offer him his services, and beg him to be his guru. Hanuman becoming a disciple of the sun is an interesting episode. The sun first refused to teach Hanuman and gave the excuse that it is too noisy since his chariot is always moving. Hanuman found a solution of only keeping his ear inside the sun’s chariot and moving at the speed of the chariot along with the sun. Hanuman thus learned from the sun all types of knowledge. He kept flying with the speed of the wind. Hanuman later became the minister to Surya’s son Sugreeva. He forged the friendship between Rama and Sugreeva and helped Sugreeva regain his lost kingdom.
Tuma upakara Sugreeva hi keenha Rama milaaya Raajapada deenha …is the line in the Hanuman Chalisa that describes this event.
Siva Purana describes some important events which occur in the story of Rama. Siva Himself incarnated as Hanuman, the Vanara, and became a servant to Sita and Rama. He established the concept of devotion on earth. Hanuman restored Lakshmana’s life. He destroyed the arrogance of all the gods in the form of Rudra. In future Yugas also He helps. Studying the story of Hanuman fulfills the desires of all devotees of Rama, and protects them. Hanuman’s incarnation is very powerful. It grants fame and long life. It fulfills all desires and bestows liberation also.
Bhajan: Kesari Nandana vandanamayya
(O son of Kesari, I bow down to you. Please do not get vexed with me. Please patiently listen to my plea. Without being close to your feet, we would be frightened to take repeated births, O Lord. Regardless of how many lifetimes we have to go through, please ensure that we remain devoted to you. During difficult times, please give us the strength to praise you with unwavering faith. You are our closest relative, O Ocean of Compassion. Please burn all our bonds. Remove all our anxieties, and develop our power of contemplation. Please hold us by hand and support us.)
Hanuman was born to Anjana. Siva Mahadeva was born as Hanuman, the most valiant warrior, the Son of Wind, according to Vayu Purana.
Parvati once asked Siva why He always chants the name ‘Rama Rama’. Is one supposed to then chant, “I, I, I, I”? Should one repeat one’s own name?
Siva had once told Parvati that He was going to take birth on earth to serve Rama. She therefore asked Siva the reason why He was going to do that. Parvati wondered why Siva was so keen on serving Rama and why He keeps ever remembering and chanting the name of Rama. Siva explained to her thus: Rama establishes Dharma. I have to help Him in that mission.
Parvati reminded Siva that Ravana, whom Rama was going to kill, is Siva’s devotee. She further questioned: How can You help Rama to kill Ravana, who in his devotion towards you, cut off his ten heads and offered them to you? Ravana’s devotion is remarkable. How can you even think of helping Rama in the killing of your own dear devotee? It seems inappropriate.
Siva agreed with Parvati that a devotee like Ravana is indeed rare. But when ego overtakes discretion, a person has to be destroyed. Devotion has no room for ego. Ravana offered me worship, no doubt. He gave me his ten heads and satisfied ten of my aspects. But Ravana rejected the 11th aspect of mine, that of Rudra. He has insulted me by forgetting and ignoring this aspect of mine out of negligence and arrogance. He even snubbed and slighted me by disregarding the importance of this significant part of mine. So I have to help Rama to kill him.
Parvati felt very happy and satisfied when she heard this explanation. The secret came out because of Parvati’s query.
Bhajan: Namah Parvatipataye Harahara Mahadeva Sambho
In the story of Hanuman, we have already learned about the killing of the demon Gardabhasura/demon in a donkey’s form who tormented all the gods with his atrocities. During the killing of Siva’s devotee Gardabhasura by Vishnu, Siva gave Vishnu some boons. Gardabhasura was a blot on this earth because of his evil nature and the super powers he possessed as a result of Siva’s boons to him. Vishnu insisted that He should be destroyed. Siva challenged Vishnu that He could not harm His devotee. He took a vow that if Vishnu succeeded in killing Gardabhasura, Vishnu had to agree to receive Siva’s services. Vishnu also vowed that if He failed in killing Gardabhasura, He would become a servant not only to Siva but to His entire entourage as well.
Vishnu succeeded in killing Gardabhasura. Siva begged to become the servant of Vishnu. Vishnu told Siva that His looks are frightening. Even the gods will run away in fright if He at once appeared before them as Vishnu’s servant. This is not the right time for You to serve me. Be born as Hanuman to serve me when I am born as Rama to protect Dharma, said Vishnu.
This above story we all must remember always.
Vidyavana guni ati chaatura Rama kaaja kariveko aatura …line in the Hanuman Chalisa explains the merits of Hanuman and his eagerness to serve Rama in his mission.
Bhajan: Ishapateesa jagannivasa
Ananda Ramayana describes the birth of Hanuman in detail.
Anjana performed severe penance desiring a child and Siva appeared before her and taught her a mantra. Siva gave her a boon to be born to her with His 11th aspect as Rudra. We have already learned about this.
In narrating history, sometimes some details are left out. For continuity of the narration of one topic, some minor details have to be left out. Some omissions and clashes are found in the Puranas. You have to mix and match sometimes, to find the missing pieces and fill in the blanks.
Dasaratha performed the Putrkameshti Yajna desiring children. Fire God as Yajna Purusha emerged out of the fire pit and offered a pot of milk pudding to be shared by the three queens. This story is well known. A bird/parrot (Swamiji calls it a parrot) took away the portion of the payasam belonging to Kaikeyi.
An apsara/celestial dancer by the name of Suvarchala (not Hanuman’s consort) became arrogant of her beauty of possessing five vivid colors, Pancharangi. She became cursed for her arrogance.
Parrots possessing such pure colors are amazing. They cannot be replicated.
Indra was disturbed by Suvarchala, the apsara’s conceit and poking attitude and cursed her to take birth as a bird. Another cursed Gandharva also was born as a bird and all the birds we now have in our Shuka Vana are the progeny of that bird couple. There is no doubt about it. They all act like humans and gods. At least most of them. Only a few act like birds.
When Indra cursed Suvarchala to be born on earth as a bird, the apsara felt remorseful and begged for atonement of her curse. To get released from her curse Indra gave her the remedy: the bird had to touch the vessel given to Kaikeyi by the Yajna Purusha. Indra cautioned her not to drink the contents of the vessel.
It is a common observation that parrots normally do not drink properly from a container placed before them, but have the tendency to simply sit on the rim or tip over the container to spill the contents. This apsara’s action of merely touching the container has been inherited by them.
The bird/parrot took away Kaikeyi’s container.
Finally the other two queens shared a part of their share with Kaikeyi. The bird held the pot in its beak and flew away. It was too heavy and therefore slipped from her grip.
Vayu, who knew that it was Yajna Prasadam and should not be wasted, kept it from falling to the ground. He carried it away and did not know where to drop it. Then he saw Anjana engaged in deep penance. He had heard Siva’s promise given to Anjana that he would be born to her. He now remembered Siva’s boon. He hence gave the payasam to Anjana to consume.
Hanuman in this way is actually Rama’s elder brother. He may also be called the parrot’s son.
In the form of a parrot, Rama keeps landing on Hanuman’s shoulder. This is not a make-believe concept. This is the true story. Siva was thus born to serve Rama.
The apsara, now released from the curse, returned to Brahma Loka. She requested Brahma that birds on earth should be blessed with her beautiful colors. Therefore the species remained on earth in their amazing bright colors, parrots especially.
Bhajan: jeevake jeevanu sanjeevananu
When we think of the mighty feats of Hanuman, the first thing we remember is his crossing of the ocean.
Fasting can make one fly to any heights, it is said.
Sanjeevani mountain was brought to Lanka all the way down from the Himalayas by Hanuman. The Rameswara episode is also very important for Rama and Sita. By the killing of Ravana all the worlds rejoiced and enjoyed peace thereafter. However, Rama incurred the sin of killing a brahmin/Brahmahatya. This troubled Rama intensely.
Ravana had the title Ravana Brahma. He was a very pious soul and a great devotee of Siva. He had one flaw in his nature and he became cursed. He desired to be killed only by Rama. Sita was actually like his daughter.
Ravana had no need for the company of this Sita who was emaciated and was nothing but skin and bones. Her cheek bones were sticking out from starving herself. Her eyes were swollen from crying and drawn inside like deep holes. How can anyone be attracted towards such a woman, known as Sita Mahalakshmi?
Ravana was a great Jnani. He knew that unless he kept Sita captive, Rama would not come to kill him. Ravana was once one of the pair Jaya-Vijaya (guards at the gates of Vishnu’s residence). It is a long story.
Ravana had for his companionship great celestial dancers and the most beautiful, divine women. Ravana had thousands of wives. Ravana was a great person, but his nature was flawed.
Rishis said to Rama that that by consecrating a Siva Lingam from Kasi, He could atone for all sins such as killing a brahmin, failing to feed the ancestors, of being cruel towards parents, of killing cows, destroying fetuses, and so on. Killing cows is a very great sin. With devotion, if one worships a Siva Lingam and offers Abhishekam, all sins get washed away.
Rama knew that only Hanuman could fly to Kasi and bring back a Siva Lingam. Rama felt sorry that He was once again assigning to Hanuman a difficult task of flying a long distance. He appealed to Hanuman to bring Him the Siva Lingam. Hanuman was happy that Rama was willing to receive his services in particular, when there were so many others who were ready to serve him. He considered it a boon to be of service to Rama.
Rama said: Go to Kasi and get a good SivaLingam after obtaining Siva’s permission. Hanuman flew with the speed of wind to Kasi.
Bhajan: Kasi, Ganga sangata Varanasi
Hanuman saw thousands of Siva Lingams there at Kasi. Almost like grains of sand, there were countless Siva Lingams scattered everywhere. He got confused. He did not know whether he should pick a black or a white Siva Lingam, a big or a small Siva Lingam. There was no one to advise him. He prayed to Siva. Siva came late. Hanuman got delayed. Give me one Siva Lingam quick, said Hanuman to Siva. He got permission from Siva and obtained four different Siva Lingams, just in case, since he did receive specifications as to what kind of a Siva Lingam to pick up.
Swamiji sometimes says bring four idols from Rajasthan. Why? We only need one. It does not matter. We will find use for them. Somebody will pick up the extra ones.
Hanuman carried the four Siva Lingams, one in each of the two hands, one held in his mouth, and a fourth one held with his tail. One fell off from one hand and the other also fell off from the other hand, along the way. The one he held in his mouth also slipped and fell due to his intense speed. Wherever they fell, those places became great pilgrimage centers of Lord Siva, the scriptures say.
Only the one held with the tail arrived in Rameswaram safely.
By the time Hanuman arrived, the auspicious Muhurtam was over. Sita had by then made a Siva Lingam with sand from the seashore. Rama worshiped this Siva Lingam and consecrated it because the rishis told Rama to hurry up before the auspicious time was over. Thus, Rama became free from the sin of killing Ravana by consecrating a Siva Lingam in Rameswaram and offering it worship.
Bhajan: jyotirlingakara
Hanuman arrived with the Siva Lingam held by his tail. The other Siva Lingams fell down on the way.
Hanuman was extremely disappointed that he failed to arrive in time for the great consecration of the Siva Lingam. He felt awful that he could not fulfill this last one of Sri Rama’s wishes. Rama consoled Hanuman very fondly. He decided to consecrate this second Siva Lingam also nearby. He gave Hanuman the boon that devotees who come to Rameswaram, in order to receive the fruits of their prayers, have to first worship the Siva Lingam brought by Hanuman, the Lord who will be called Hanumadeeswara, before offering worship to the one consecrated by Rama, the one made with sand by Sita’s own hands.
Rama at this time disclosed another important secret to Hanuman as to why He completed the ritual during Hanuman’s absence:
The reason I completed the consecration of the Siva Lingam before your arrival is this. I invoked the life energy of Lord Siva into the Siva Lingam. Had you been present here at that time, by the power of my prayers, you would have merged your own life force into the Siva Lingam when I thus made my powerful invocation. To prevent that, I had to send you far away.
You would have become excited with my plea, and responding to my fervent prayer, you would have entered into the Siva Lingam to get established and settled inside it. I would not have been able to remain separated from you. You have to remain in my company for these 10,000 years of my rule of Ayodhya. Thereafter, you have to remain on earth until the end of this Kalpa, spreading amongst all people the fervor of devotion towards Rama. At the end of this Kalpa, in the coming Kalpa, in the future, you will be the Brahma. People will praise you as their new Brahma. This is my design and my plan. Therefore, you must not feel bad that this great ritual took place in your absence.
Whenever I sing or chant mantras, you lose control over yourself in your excitement. You lose discretion. Knowing that, I had to send you away. If you, with your total essence of Siva, were to merge into the Siva Lingam upon hearing my prayers, then I would be left without my most beloved Hanuman, and such a situation would have drowned me in sorrow. It is impossible for me to bear separation from you.
After hearing this detailed explanation from Rama Himself, Hanuman understood Rama’s sentiment and the reason why he had been sent away preventing him from being present at such an important occasion. Hanuman shed copious tears of joy. Rama and Hanuman are inseparable. Hanuman is none other than Lord Siva Himself. This above explanation proves it.
Sri Rama then embraced Hanuman. The two of them merged and became one. During His lifetime Rama embraced only Hanuman. He did not embrace anyone else. Krishna, on the other hand, embraced thousands of devotees.
Without the remembrance of Siva, no ritual yields fruits. Hanuman is full of Siva’s energy.
Since we have made a determination to chant the Hanuman Chalisa 130 crore times to receive Hanuman’s grace and blessings, everyone must exceed their capacity in chanting the Hanuman Chalisa and fulfill this vow.
Bhajan. Jap karo nith jap karo Chalisa ka jaap karo
Hanuman Chalisa chanting
The daily total of Hanuman Chalisa repetition count should be at least five Lakhs. I actually expect 25 Lakhs a day to easily meet our target. Every one of you must learn the Hanuman Chalisa. Learn from friends or others who know it. Do not withhold from reporting your daily count. Do group chanting in schools, temples, and other places.
Memorize the prayer. Then you can do it anywhere. Do not sacrifice accuracy for speed. Wrong pronunciation must be avoided. It is wrong to utter wrong syllables. You must avoid mistakes.
Lots of count must be reported daily. Learn how to send name, date, place, and count along with photo to sgshanumanchalisa@gmail.com
The trip to Australia is coming up soon. You all know about it. Swamiji now proceeds to perform the final worship. Please be careful with those seated next to you who may be drowsy or sleeping.
