Srimad Bhagavatam – day 451
Gajendra continued, “The Supreme Lord is inherently devoid of birth, action, name, form, qualities or faults. Even then, for the purposes of creation and annihilation of the material worlds, through the medium of His illusionary energy, He accepts them in accordance to the requirements of place and time.
Tasmai namaḥ pareśāya brahmaṇe ’nanta-śaktaye
Arūpāyoru-rūpāya nama āścarya-karmaṇe
Although the Supreme Lord who is beyond time and place is inherently formless, He manifests in innumerable forms. The transcendental sports of this Supreme Lord, who possesses unlimited energies, are astonishing. To such Supreme Lord, I bow again and again.
Nama ātma-pradīpāya sākṣiṇe paramātmane
Namo girāṁ vidūrāya manasaś cetasām api
The Self-effulgent Supreme Lord exists as the Self within all living entities. He is the eternal witness. The form of such Supreme Lord is beyond the scope of mind and speech. To such Supreme Lord I bow again and again.
The intelligent aspirant, who is predominantly replete with traits of goodness (sattva) will, through sama, dama and other strict Yogic austerities, obtain the Supreme Lord as his inner Self. The Supreme Lord, who bestows liberation, is himself the experience called liberation. I offer obeisance to Him.
When the Supreme Lord, through His illusory energy, predominantly accepts traits of goodness (sattva), He appears peaceful and calm. When He accepts traits of passion (rajo guna), He appears ferocious and when He predominantly accepts traits of ignorance, He appears ignorant and foolish. He at times appears like a mad, shameless person.
Nevertheless, no differences exist in his inherent non-dual knowledge. I offer many obeisances to this Supreme Lord who is equally dear to everyone.
The Supreme Lord, who is the Lord of everyone, shines as the inner ruler (kṣetrajna) and witness. He is Pure Consciousness. Being complete in every aspect, He remains the support for illusory energy (maya) and Nature (prakṛti). This Lord is the cause for the existence of everything. However there is no cause (kāraṇa) on which His existence rests. To Him, I offer repeated obeisances.
O Lord, You who exist as the Self’s consciousness within every living entity, remain as a witness for all the senses and also for the sound, touch, form, taste and smell which are the objects of the senses. As the Self, You remain the fundamental instrument for all the thoughts and intents which arise in the mind. This illusory unreal world, this body and other objects which are reflections of the Self, indicate You who are Pure Consciousness. Please accept my respectful obeisance.
O Lord, You are the cause for all existences. However, You have no cause for Your existence. Even though everything originates from You alone, none of them inherently exist in You. You are that Supreme controller who creates astonishment. Just as all rivers merge into the oceans, all the Vedas and Shastras merge into You alone! You are the personification of liberation. You are the ultimate position sought after by all spiritual aspirants. To You I offer heartfelt obeisances.
Just as fire is hidden deep within the firewood, this body, which is the outcome of the trigunas, hides within it, the Self which is an embodiment of pure knowledge.
In the beginning of creation, the Supreme Lord intended to create turbulence in the three attributes of Nature (trigunas) and through it manifest as the visible world. This Lord makes himself known as the Self to those supreme saints who are established in the Self-knowledge which is untouched by fruitive actions, and who have crossed the limitations of lawful and forbidden actions. To such Supreme Lord I offer obeisance.
O ever liberated Lord, You are of unlimited compassion. You free ignorant beings like me from the shackles of worldly bondages. You are beyond destruction. O Lord, You are omniscient. You manifest as the Pure Consciousness who resides in close proximity to the minds of the bonded living entities. The six types of opulences of Iśwara bhava, courage, fame, prosperity, knowledge, dispassion exist in You. You cannot be measured through objects situated within the limitations of time and place. To You, O Lord, I offer plentiful obeisances.
Living entities who are overly attached to their body, children, family members, relatives, house and assets therein can never obtain God”.
People are generally inclined towards these material assets which are impermanent and temporary. They desire to construct their own house before their death. Where this desire remains unfulfilled they continue to be obsessed with it. Even if his wife were to die in the process of building his home he will not bother. He remains adamant and believes that he has accomplished his goal only after seeing his house duly constructed.
“The Lord remains untouched by the three attributes of Nature i.e. by the trigunas. Feelings of ‘I and mine’ are unknown to Him. The supreme saints eternally meditate upon Him in their hearts. He is non-dual principle. To Him I offer obeisance.
The Lord blesses those living entities, who worship Him seeking fulfilment of their three goals i.e. dharma, artha, kāma, by not only fulfilling their desires but also by providing them with celestial bodies that cannot be destroyed until the end of the creation”.
